Actually removing OtherOS did not gain Sony anything in security... The ones that wanted to get access to the system could use stay at a lower firmware go "get in"..

Rumors are that they removed it because they wanted to reduce the costs...

And about a year ago when he "tried"... he actually did managed to get around the memory-controller to read memory that should have been protected so in a way he actually succeeded in hacking it... But more to the point... That hack could probably only lead to some better gfx support in linux or maybe a modchip that would be easy to block... He also released minimal amount of information so nothing was really gained from the community since there was already memory-dumps from previous hacks that allowed access to about the same stuff.

Also it was NOT geohot that hacked the PS3, it was fail0verflow.. geohot only used the information that he got from fail0verflow and published it. Initially the only thing released was not going to allow pirated games but only to allow homebrew (linux/xbmc etc) to be run on the system...

So they could then remove the possibility to play games too if they wanted...

No... A company cannot, legally, remove a feature a device was advertised with via a EULA or otherwise...
PS3 was advertised with PSN + OtherOS.. If they remove either it's a breach of contract..... We will see what happens with the lawsuit from now on but it will probably takes many years before anything might come from it....

Those EULA's can be argued alot... But here in Sweden they are still not legal.. All contracts must be agreen on BEFORE the sale, everything after it not valid..

Also, i don't think those EULA's has been proven i court in USA either... And if you would break the EULA then what would happen?? You would lose access to PSN or the PS3 also??..

All they can do with the EULA is prevent access to the PSN as was the case before with Microsoft when their xbox was cracked...

Correct, but the thing is that there are more things that play pirated games that are possible...

Just to name a few:
1. Install full games, that you own, to the HD to increase performance and reduce the wear on the EXPENSIVE blueray-laser.
2. Run a Linux system. XBMC and similar will follow shortly. (Even better than OtherOS since we now have full access to the GPU)
3. Run emulators of old games...
4. Make backups of legally purchased PSN games without the need of an external drive.. (since we could be banned or whatever in the future)

Sure these things are not what Sony intended but still, it in my right to do it since i do own the hardware... It could be argued that i dont have permission to make a copy of my game to the harddrive... But has it not already been determined that doing a backup of a disk you own is legal??

> When you give people a source to exploit, they will use it.
So if i sell a car i should be held responsible for the things that the new owner MIGHT do with it?

And about bulldozing abandoned buildings... dont you think that might be because those buildings could be dangerous to the people that might enter them??

You have your rights to do whatever you want to do with your system. No one is arguing with that. You own the damn console. However, I think most of these posts are aimed at Hackers who uses these hacks to ruin online gaming and for piracy. If you are a hacker and you just use your "hack" ps3 for homebrew, other OS, and Custom firmware than that is fine. But you're probably aware by now that 99% of the people who Hack the console use it for piracy and to ruin other peoples fun online.

The only reason why sony remove otherOS is because about a year ago Geohotz mention that he will use Linux to hack the PS3. In response to Geohotz, Sony have to make a decision to remove the OtherOS. I did not understand why GeoHotz tried to hack the PS3 anyways. He said the reason why he hacked the PS3 is to regain OtherOS. This contradict with his actions about a year ago. If he was only interested in OtherOS why did he tried to hack the PS3 a year ago when Sony allowed OtherOS??

actually if you've updated to the latest firmware than you've already signed the contract. When Sony released an update to remove the other OS on the PS3, The EULA stated that by updating to the newest firmware you are agreeing to have OtherOs to be removed. You can simply say No but you wont have PSN access, but if you accept than OtherOS is disable. Try reading the EULA everytime you update.

You whiners are a bunch of fagggs...
I fuckin' own the PS3 I bought..
I'll do what I want with it and if that involves using custom firmware & homebrew to play my old school childhood games, then so be it!
Wanna ban me from the PSN?! Thats fine, I'll just use another PS3 to get online for PSN games - simple as that SONY... WHICH MEANS YOU GAIN ANOTHER SALE!! IDIOTS.... Microsoft isnt hurting from the xBox 3-shitty being hacked.
Wii sales arent hurting from being hacked.. the PS1 & PS2 sales werent hurt from hacking!! Shhhhiitt... sales probably went up (that is till the PS3)!!
Hackers that ruin online gaming with cheats & "god modes" etc - fine, BAN THE INDIVIDUAL! Socom 2 was hacked LIKE CRAZY!! But SONY wasnt crying for that game or issue now was it?! Anybody remember the credit card disc swap hack on the PS2?? Easily found on google and no problem whatsoever with SONY..
The PS3 was UNTOUCHED for all this time until SONY took Linux abilities away... now, theyre being ANALLLLYY RAPED by these hackers who makes pennies compared to the SONY engineers & software techs who probably have nice diplomas and certificates on their walls. I'm glad this has finally happened. If major companies that pull these damn stunts were reminded by the public that WE OWN THEIR ASSSSES by choosing to buy or not to buy, they wouldnt be trying to pull the rug out from under us and let us do what we want with the product we buy!!

Well, I can see why people wanna do whatever they want with their system, but I also understand that Sony has to do what they are doing right now, because, if this thing continues to grow, and people do what they allready did to mw2 (and they will, can't imagine what they can do to other games:p) Sony will lose alot of users, because it sucks playing like that( if you don't want to:p) it ain't no fun at all being shot across the map, through 100's of walls, without the player shooting not even looking in your direction, or people flying from rooftop to rooftop and oitside of the map, it kinda ruins the game for people who wants to play the game as it is supposed to be played... Bu we'll judt have to wait and see what happens:)

All I know is that hackers have ruined MW2 since this info came out.
Once you give an item away it belongs to the person you have given to. Not once is it mentioned in Sony's contract that gamers do not completely own their PS3 console. If you married a woman who recently divorced from another guy would her ex-husband have the right to come over to your house, lift her skirt up, and engage in sexual intercourse with her and then leave while you're still there??

Absolutely NOT! She is YOUR wife and no one can make love to her but YOU...or at least I hope. I would be pretty upset is someone started banging my wife. But hey to each his own.

Even if I didn’t see him breaking in the house himself, I think I would have all the rights to at least sue him."

You are wrong with that analogy. Sony has been advanced in protecting its console until now. These "hackers" found a way to circumvent their protection. They should turn around and find a way of re-establishing their Protection Methods by patching and modifying their code.

or they can turn around and hire these "hackers" and solidify their security algorithms and wait till the next "GeoHot" comes along.

I would use a lock analogy. If Yale company advertises they have an unbreakable lock and a lock breaker/picker manages to pick it, It should be Yale's responsibility to make sure they fix that problem.

"The latest hack of the PS3 came from Geohot and landed him in hot water with Sony suing him for circumventing the security on the console despite the fact that bypassing security doesn’t mean the user is a pirate."

I don't know. Bypassing security for yourself is one thing, publicizing secret security keys is another thing.
