So if Apple followed it's own standards + EPEAT standards, it would have a super-environmentally friendly product, no? This is nothing but Apple spin. They've taken their product in an environmentally unfriendly direction by making it nonserviceable so they want to redefine standards in order to hide that fact. SPINPEAT, nothing more.

Apple was one of the main writers of the EPEAT standard and was a member of the board of advisors for the EPEAT system so they were actively engaged in EPEAT and were a strong supporter of it. They were engaged in the revision for the standard that has been going on since the end of last year.

Slate computers, like the iPad, are not in the EPEAT standard due to the fact that slates are explicitly excluded from meeting ENERGY STAR 5.2. EPEAT is dynamically linked to ENERGY STAR so that only products that can meet ENERGY STAR can meet EPEAT. EPEAT is a more comprehensive program in that it includes not only requirements for Energy but also for toxics, recyclable design, end-of-life, corporate reporting and packaging, among other criteria.

The next revision of ENERGY STAR is considering allowing slates to meet ENERGY STAR and once that occurs, EPEAT may have slate computers registered - provided they can meet the required criteria of the EPEAT standard which does include some recyclable design characteristics that may not be able to be met by all slate computers on the market today.

when you glue the battery to the case and solder the ram to the logic board of course you're not going to meet EPEAT standards

Apple writing it's own standards has nothing to do with the environment. The only green they care about is money. They lost their EPEAT certification because they cared more about milking their customers for every dime they could. Now they're trying to muddy the waters by throwing these other statistics.

What? They wrote the standard and cannot comply with the new Mac books because of the ascetics (keeping a battery glued in versus more development for efficient-thinner battery). Looks like Apple and Paula Dean have more in-common now.

Soooo Apple wants to hold itself to higher standards than EPEAT sets for them? I don't normally say this when it comes to Apple, but way to go Apple.
I guess my only question is why they can't do this without still being EPEAT certified? Are they trying to get everyone else to be held to the same standards?
