Windows XP has a lot more features and theme support than any edition of Windows 7. And is faster than Windows 7.

But you can change the desktop theme on Windows 7 Starter by setting your theme to Windows Classic. And from there you can change the desktop, taskbar color, and text to any color you want.

And if you want to change the wallpaper you can download and install Personalization Panel,here-http://winaero.com/comment.php?comment.news.4 or Oceanis. That will change the wallpaper on Windows 7 Starter.

I use Personalization Panel on my Windows 7 Starter and it works. But I don't understand why they don't just put Windows 7 Home Premium on all of the netbooks instead of Starter. Because I have upgraded most of my netbooks to Windows 7 Home premium and Professional. And they run great without any problems.

So you can run higher editions of Windows 7,Home Premium and above on a netbook. No matter what shopkeepers, who don't know anything about computers tell you. Andrea Borman.

I too recently purchased a netbook toshiba NB205 and unaware
that it lacked all what I loved in XP pro. I now have 3 computers
and it seem clear to me that XP is always my operating system choice.

I spent many hours figuring out if it were possible to place XP
on my latest purchase-the NB205 toshiba.

Microsoft says NO. Many blog posts say No. I contacted a friend
in the IT business and after 3 days got a reply. "My research says
that it is not possible to place XP onto the windows 7 laptop your
refer to.

Needless to say I wanted my answer to be positive. After as mentioned
spending hour after hour in this desire. I almost gave up. Then I realized
all my options and missed a single one-my last option. I was ready to toss
this NEW laptop!

And I contacted RMPrep also, they certainly know a lot, but even that was
not enough. But it did help,so I give myself just a small credit amount in
this endeavor.

Then with just a few or several clicks of the mouse MY (windows XP pro disc) took over and I am not speaking of dual boots or virtual drives,
I have windows XP pro on this Toshiba laptop NB205 and it's install went
without flaw. Naturally the drivers have to be installed afterwards and
this appeared to be a problem at first but then resolved also after some
more work.

I encountered one more issue and that was a security issue that prevents
certain programs of mine from running. But that too I resolved after reading up on the issue on "Wikipedia" not to say that "wikipedia" had the
understanding of what I was doing. I was just wanting PRO info as to
DEP (data execution prevention). Yes I made a few mistakes along the way and then loaded every MF program I ever use with XP onto this new NB205.

My first attempt although working had a small issue. My wife said you can
do that to (fix that issue too) and in another hour and about aa falf I
did the whole job over from scratch again, just to convince myself that I
was on the right track and could do it easily once agin, the install, my
special security programs, and the drivers. All is well now.

Microsoft should receive a medal for telling a lie. but of course that
wont happen.

So also I will say this: One can go back and forthfrom XP to Vista to
windows 7 or the otherway around. Not a problem at all. This too I have done and this works well also. naturally the drivers and your programs
will be seperate after the install. No I do not install drivers at the
beginning of an install, I have always done this afterward. And I do that
with all my computers.

I suggest people should contact Microsoft and tell them off. There business is too glorify whatever was so sales can go on and make it hard
if not impossible for one as you may have wanted to do, the installing of
XP onto a laptop. Yes this can be done on HP netbooks, and Asus EEE mini books.

So lets roll um.

So lets roll um.

if you have no install disk for win7 it could be risky, not sure how the backup/recovery works in 7 Home but maybe you can create a recovery disc / usb stick in case XP doesn't work out?

My Acer 532h came with Win7 Starter, which as everyone else has, I hated. So, I made the choice to spend the bucks to upgrade to Windows 7 Home. Really not happy with that choice. Stuff is laggy. The battery life is down about 1/3rd. What I REALLY want to do is ditch Win7 entirely and load XP on it, but am wondering if this is a doable thing without consequences. Since there is no Win7 install disk if something goes horribly wrong. Anyone got thoughts.

XP is still the best netbook OS imo, though I also have 7 and Ubuntu on mine, neither of them can compete with XP in batter life or overall responsiveness on a slower CPU. The main problem a lot of people seem to have with XP is the default Luna theme, which personally I can't stand either. The first thing I've always done with a new XP install is switch to one of lassekongo83's awesome styles. People ask me what OS I'm running, assuming it's some kind of Linux (though sometimes it is) but when I tell them it's just XP they can't believe it. It's amazing how few people know you can easily change the theme to something much nicer than Luna. As for the window animations and aero peek and 3D-flip and all that, I personally can't stand that stuff, although even my netbook can handle it thanks to the Nvidia ION gpu, I still turn all that jazz off even XP's limited "eye candy"

wow... thanks for this review. I didn't know the (severe) limitations of Windows 7 Starter. I agree - it makes the XP computer more valuable in my eyes. I was looking at two similar systems recently, and was giving one preference because it has Win7 - now I'm reversing that thought!

Given the reviews of the Acer Aspire One with XP and Android, I would surely say it will be outdated by the time Chrome rolls around. The reviews (like this one from PC Mag - http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2354304,00.asp ) are far from stellar and the OS was just not optimized for a laptop type device. Chrome will be designed for the computer form factor. Looks like we will find out more about Chrome tomorrow...

I am interested in the current dual boot offering from Acer - one being XP and the other being Android. Sounds logical and with great potential for growth as the Android apps proliferate.
Any thoughts on the potential for that to be a machine "outdated" by the release of Chrome OS? - would I change my XP partition to a Chrome partition/replace the Andriod with Chrome OS (believing that Chrome OS would also support the apps issued for Android)...or should I wait for hardware designed to run Chrome OS?
Sorry if this "seems" off topic, but it Does fit the article title. S/Coda
