Considering there are 100,000s of movies worth watching, and (at least) a few hundred I REALLY want to see, I'd rather pay 10 bucks a month for 1 BD rental at a time and unlimited streaming as opposed to 20+ bucks a month and attempt to own or a la carte rental (especially with older movies).

Netflix has it right, get the quantity first, then the quality. Either way people will complain: "The # of movies is awesome, but the quality can be better!" or "The # of movies suck but the ones they do have look and sound great!" But the first complaint is more manageable, especially since our ISP's have Data caps on us and they don't have to fudge with the original recording of the film (less costs/more savings - passed to consumers)

But let's be honest, you don't need to watch movies that came out before 1990's in HD and 7.1 surround sound. There's no point. There was a time where movies were still amazing and the special effects were non existent and the acting was all that mattered. Hell, just watching Marx Brothers movies on VHS is enough you crapping your pants.

If you have trouble immersing yourself when you are watching the original star wars on a 50" screen and stereo sound, watching movies isn't for you and you're most likely a gamer.

Don't get me wrong either, I buy Blu-Rays, but I limit myself to only the movies I really loved and want to see special features: Casino Royal, Quantum of Solace, Watchmen, Ironman, Dark Knight, etc.

"New Standards" are created for many reasons. One reason being the ability to make money.
You see Don, you are now just like me and all the old grayhairs who bemoaned the proliferation of mp3 and itunes. Blu-ray is clearly superior, but many will state that the quality of streaming movies on Netflix/Amazon/itunes/etc are "Good enough". Similar to 2002 when it was CD/SACD/DVD-A vs mp3, now its netflix/Amazon/Vudu/itunes vs Blu-ray. Sadly, convenience always trumps performance.

If you have a 50" screen that displays 1080p and love animated movies (Toy Story, Shrek etc) you can NOT tell me you can't see a decent difference between DVD and Blu Ray. Personally, it is night and day. Then again, to me I consider the difference between MP3 and WAV/AIFF night and day also.

I want a compatible streaming version. I am over discs. I have converted my whole collection of DVDs to the Apple TV and am doing the same now with Bluray. It isn't the same quality as Bluray though it is much better than DVD. It is only a short time before we will be able to have Blu Ray quality with the Bluray. Especially with the Sandy Bridge platform being supported by the big movie studios.

Check out HandBrake 0.9.5. It now supports Blu-Ray directory structure AND DTS to AC3 encoding. Combined with AnyDVDHD, Bluray ripping is now a 1 step process. I use this setup to convert blurays to 720p AppleTV files and does a fantastic job at about real time on my Mac Pro. Check it out.

When we went from VHS to Laserdisc/DVD, it was a major upgrade in quality. No more fiddling with tracking, no more warped cassettes and tape. Way better picture and sound. Going from DVD to Blu-Ray is far, far less dramatic. It's impossible for me to get excited about Blu-Ray... even if I got a player for free, I sure as hell wouldn't spend a dime to replace my DVDs. It's a point upgrade. If VHS was Home Video 1.0, DVD was Home Video 2.0, then Blu-Ray is Home Video 2.5. So to speak.

Living quite happily without Blue Ray.

Let's be frank... the motion picture companies (and music companies) are actively working to get us to have to buy a new copy of the a pictures we've already purchased. We see them pushing for me to buy a separate copy for my PSP, for my DVD player, for my digital library, etc. We've all successfully pushed back just a little on this, and so it hasn't gone as far as it could potentially have, but frankly it's gone way farther than is right, as evidenced by the industries successful lobbying to create laws that inhibit our use of the "fair use" laws to back up our own libraries. Just one more way to make sure if we scratch a disc, it has to be purchased again, and we can't (legally) have a backup.

Yes, Blu-Ray does involve a nice image upgrade, but really it's not that significant of one... far too incremental of an upgrade for me to bother with much. I'm also not that fussed about putting one more box into my entertainment center. I've enjoyed the Blue rays when I've seen them, but I'm not replacing thousands of dollars worth of DVD's with Blue Ray... heck, lots of the movies can't even be purchased on Blue Ray yet so it's still a bit soon to talk about replacing the format.

So here I am, after having watched Aliens, Lethal Weapon 2, and now Johnny Mnemonic, and wondering what all the fuss is. With Netflix on my PS3 I can't tell the difference between a DVD and streaming, and after having watched a few Blu-Rays on my PS3, I can't really tell the difference. Granted I don't have the best TV, but it is 1080P, or the highest quality soundsystem, but I am also as broke as the average american and not willing to spend a months salary on an entertainment system!

Streaming is fantastic for films you aren't sure about, am I going to buy 450 films that are on my Netflix Q on Blu-ray because they look better? Hell no.

Older films don't benefit THAT much from being on BR so stop that argument.

And seriously, you actually watched Avatar more than once? Yikes what a overly long & pretentious film that was!

Hmm upon a reread of my post it seems like I'm arguing 2 points. I sort of am, but really online streaming; iTunes, Netflix, etc, are as good as dvds.

Bluray isn't much of an option. Due to situations surrounding the fragility of the media, I rip and transcode all of the dvds I own. I then stick them on my desktop/homeserver and stream them to the ps3. Which then upscales and post processes them for viewing.

I've owned a bluray player for 2 years now, a ps3, I have 2 bluray movies, Cars and Serenity, both only because I couldn't find them on dvd. Now I would start buying Bluray copies of movies if there was a way(on linux, without wine etc) to rip them and serve them up over UPnP.

TL:DR version, "Call me when Blurays are as versatile as DvDs."

He probably doesn't have 40 mbps, very few people do, and that's kind of the whole point. If the best-feasible-quality streaming copy of Serenity can't look as good as the BluRay, it doesn't really matter why, the point is it's inferior quality.

Do you have in the neighborhood of 40Mbps (stable at that speed for 2+ hours) worth of bandwidth? Serenity on bluray is around 35-40Mbps.

anyways, I still buy dvds when available, mainly because like you I don't want to get up off the couch. I rip the dvds and stream them to the TV via a upnp server. I can't rip bluray reliably yet(lack of a bluray drive withstanding). Also my main desktop machine isn't likely to get a player anytime soon, as I'm not even sure there is a "legit" dvd player for linux yet.

Add to the laziness, 2 toddlers, and if i let them get a hold of a disk for longer the 3 seconds without supervision the disk is ruined. I gather they make good things to put on the floor of the entryway and spin on. So until blurays become as hard as diamonds, or until I can rip them reliablly. I'll be keeping my DVDs thanks. Even though the Disney ones have a habit of crashing my dvd drives firmware.
