Worth Reading?
Designers seem determined to step out from behind the drawing boards and into the spotlight, and nobody gets more column inches (or, for that matter, hyperbole) than BMW’s Chris Bangle. Design & Emotion have interviewed him, covering everything from 5-Axis milled door handles to the balance of design and semantics, with the much-maligned i-Drive interface along the way.
Personally, it’s been my experience that younger drivers appreciate Bangle’s so-called “Flame Surfacing” than more mature demographics, who find it far more challenging than any of the company’s previous design themes. Yet despite the fact that the youth market generally doesn’t have the money to consider a BMW 7-Series, sales of cars in all ranges have nonetheless been rising steadily.
