BMW X5 Security Plus: a bulletproof car for your wayward adventures

Whether you live somewhere that flying bullets are an unfortunate daily risk or you participate in some interesting adventures, BMW's new X5 Security Plus has your back. The car is everything you expect from a BMW, but with the added perk of a bulletproof body.

Says the automaker, "The risk of armed violence — and in particular, attack with automatic weapons like the AK-47 — is a fact of everyday life for certain customers." To provide for those customers in high-risk locations is the BMW X5 Security Plus, a four-seater with an armor shell that can withstand abuse from objects up to and including the AK-47.

The X5 has a security glass laminate and a polycarbonate coating — the design otherwise matches the regular X5 model, with the auto maker reassuring customers that it has the same airbags and cabin space. Steel armor is used to reinforce areas like the joints between body panels.

The extra weight of the armor won't affect driving, with BMW using suspension settings and electronic aids for a quality driving experience. The model meets protection level VR6 — hundreds of rounds have been fired at the vehicle to ensure it holds up.
