BMW M3 Sedan and M4 Coupe introduced with lighter curb weights, more power

BMW has introduced two new models, the M3 Sedan and the M4 Coupe, both of which bring engineered-in lighter curb weights over the previous generation. Though the auto maker has only revealed preliminary specifications at this point, all signs point towards two top-notch offerings, both of which go up for sale on 2015 models starting next summer. We've got a gallery for you after the break.

The two M models feature a new 3-liter engine that is about 10 kilograms lighter than what you get in the current V8 offering. Despite the lower weight, BMW promises the engine packs more punch, offering 425 horsepower, allowing the car to go from 0 to 60 MPH in 3.9 seconds. There's an M-DCT transmission, with the standard 6-speed transmission option bumping that time up to 4.1 seconds.

A lot of attention has been given to the models' cooling systems, with BMW saying that, as an example, the ultra-dynamic turbocharged offerings, the air-intake system includes an indirect intercooler, which boosts the engine's output and the charge pressure. There's water cooling to augment the radiator, among other things, all of which works together to make sure the car runs optimally when racing.

Said BMW's Dr. Friedrich Nitschke: "Four generations of the BMW M3 have blended motor sport genes and uncompromised everyday usability within an emotionally rich overall concept. The BMW M3 Sedan and BMW M4 Coupe represent an ongoing commitment to this philosophy. The engine is the heart of every M model, and the new turbocharged six-cylinder unit fitted in the two new cars combines the virtues of a high-revving naturally aspirated unit with the strengths of turbocharger technology."
