I also have the 80GB PS3 and display it on top of my media cabinet next to my center channel speaker, which is piano black, and I don’t find it loud or ugly. As for my 120GB XBOX360, now that’s ugly!

PS3 Loud? Compared to what? Compared to an XBOX it makes virtually no sound. I never hear my PS3 fans come on but with an XBOX hooked up I keep thinking the dishwasher is running in the kitchen.
The PS3 has multi-speed fans which will only come on full blast when it is hot (poor ventilation).

Also not Ugly.

I’ve had my PS3 standing up and laying down, cooling system works great both ways. A friend of mine cautioned me that his XBOX eats DVDs when he has it standing up. I don’t know if thats common for the XBOX but it doesnt seem to be a problem for the PS3.

yes, its in a entertainment system, but it has space around it, and….welll, thats where one often keeps their entertainment components. perhaps i could leave it on the back porch and run some hdmi cabling in…..

You must have your PS3 in an enclosed entertainment system or something. My PS3 is whisper quiet. It also depends on the temp you keep your house at. A friend of mine runs his thermostat at 78, so his PS3 fan kicks on afte a few hours of game play, since he’s feeding it hot air.

I must have the exact same setup as you! Iv’e got the Samsung FP-T5084 with the chrome strips on both sides…and I’ll tell you it looks superb together! Ive got the PS3 standing up, and in a very well ventilated area. I love how the PS3 looks standing up.

I don’t think the PS3 is loud or ugly either . It’s sleek and sexy and compliments my home theater system, the stand, and my 40″ Samsung LCD. In terms of noise? I barely know it’s on.
Got the 80GB Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle. Aahh…I can still play my PS2 games on it.

The fan will rarely kick on if in a well ventilated area. When i first got the PS3 I was able to sit it on top of my entertainment center in the “standing” position and never once did the fan kick on. I have made a few furniture changes and am now forced to have it in the entertainment center ventilation isn’t horrible but lacking enough to make the fan come on.

Anyway just wanted to point out that a loud fan is only a drawback depending on your setup.
