Even Amazon Kindle selling at $199 with half the RAM and half the flash with no dual cameras and microphone is losing a bit of money for each of their tablet sold; there is no way RIM can be making money selling their Playbook at that price. The difference is that Amazon can try to make up their lost revenue through their eco-system of ebooks, music, videos and other online shopping activities. What does RIM has that can help them recover their lost? How are they ever going to try to get their money back? Selling their Playbook at this price is completely unsustainable. It is either a very temporary promotion or they are preparing to clear out their existing inventory and not make any more Playbook at all.

If it can flash Android Ice-cream sandwich or Windows 8, I would be willing to buy one at $299. The hardware spec is actually respectable.

Blackberry is primarily a business phone, security is their main concern. Gimmicky web cam that most people have yet to use, not so much.

In terms of email and actual phone performance, Blackberries are one of the most solid offerings out there. It's just pretty much everything else they still have to catch up on to appeal to the non-business users.

you're right, the $200 discount to $299 is "only temporary." next month it will be down to $199. in January, they will dump whatever is left for $99. by a year from now the whole company will have been gobbled up at liquidation value.

RIM is in a death spiral. and the co-pilots don't have a clue.

Only way that'll ever happen is if they go out of business and have to clear stock. It costs them about $273 just to make the Playbook, no one sells at a loss and stays in business unless they have alternate revenue source to survive one, which RIM doesn't!

I still think QNX has a lot of promise even if RIM didn't get everything right with the tablet at launch. I had an extremely positive experience when playing with it in the store. I love bezel gestures. It's such a simple but powerful way to interact with a mobile device. If they majorly screw up the QNX phones, they might as well sell what's left of the company and call it a day. But until then, I'm not counting them out.
