Best gaming keyboards of 2014 - so far

Investing in a keyboard made specifically for gamers could mean the difference between an okay gaming experience and an excellent one — at least as far as accessories are concerned. Many keyboards are released with the claim that they're designed for gamers, but many fail to meet expectations, being little more than ordinary keyboards with flashy designs. Such isn't always the case, however, and we've pinpointed a few of the best gaming keyboards to roll out in 2014 thus far.

Razer BlackWidow Ultimate

You'd be hard-pressed to find a dedicated PC gamer who isn't fond of Razer's BlackWidow Ultimate gaming keyboard, and the newest model only serves to better what the product has already offered. The newest model boasts mechanical switches that Razer has remade from the ground-up, something the maker promises will make the offering both quicker and more responsive. The BlackWidow boasts 60 million keystrokes, 10-key roll over anti-ghosting, USB passthrough, a braided fiber cable, individually backlit keys, and more.

ROCCAT Isku

ROCCAT's Isku gaming keyboard has received consistently favorable reviews from gamers, and for good reason. The keyboard offers the maker's Easy-Shift[+] technology for activating macros if desired — up to 36 macros can be customized, each in "strategically positioned" spots, making for less hassle and distraction while gaming. There are also so-called three "thumbster keys" that can be programmed. The keyboard is an excellent choice for those who like a high level of customization control.

ASUS ROG GK2000

ASUS Republic of Gamers has rolled out many new ROG-centric gaming devices this year, among them being its GK2000, a mechanical keyboard with MX red switches, anti-ghosting tech, key customization (there's 2MB of on-board memory), five different LED backlighting effects, and more. Although this keyboard still isn't available — it hits shelves in the third-quarter — ASUS has packed it full of goodies, and it shows all the signs of being a solid choice for PC gamers.

Corsair Vengeance K95

Corsair's Vengeance K95 is a mechanical keyboard targeted at "serious gamers", offering Cherry MX Red switches, customizable lighting for each key, complete anti-ghosting, 18 programmable G-keys, and integrated memory to facilitate that. The maker tosses a two-year warranty into the mix, so if you manage to wear out a key or two, you'll be covered.
