I actually doubt that apple said anything. This is classic viral marketing. Put something edgy up for a very short while until it has been widely reported, then take it down and reap a second round of attention for doing so.
As much as BB make money from apple products, I doubt their profit margin is very much. Where they get their profits from is in accessories and overall footfall into the store.

Years of PC Vs Mac ads that were utter BS–no you don’t need to restart a Mac, it’ll crash and restart all by itself. . . very frequently.

And this ad can’t be handled for a single day? There is nothing about the duct taped tablet that signifies it as an iPad–it lacks the distinguishing home button. Other than what, it’s 4:3? There are some 4:3 tablets out there other than the iPad–did they trademark or paten 4:3 aspect ratio?

The ad should have been left alone. It’s a perfect ad for the Transformer as it describes the competition (not just Apple) succinctly for those who want more than just a tablet in a single form factor. If the competition can’t handle the truth and they think this makes them look bad then maybe they ought to hit the design table again to make some changes.

The tablet pictured is clearly not an iPad; Apple products don’t work with Windows keyboards. There’s no reason this should have been removed.

Best Buy is an Apple partner and therefore knows about the rules for trademarks. The issue here is not that the picture is “for sure” an iPad, but that it’s a violation of the Apple trademark “form” for iPad. You can’t use another companies trademark in a derogatory way, which is why companies trademark the form of their products; to stop people doing this very thing.

I’m sure Apple demanded they pull the ad, but I doubt your numbers are correct. Android phones now outsell iPhones, and Android tablets will outsell iPads. iPhones & iPads may still lead the pack, but what would you rather sell? One or two devices, or dozens?

I don’t think this looks any more like an iPad than every other tablet out there. Tablets pretty much all look the same, and everyone saying, “Oh they’re bagging on iPad” has less to do with how the tablet looks in the picture and more to do with the fact that it’s the top selling product of it’s kind. The conflict is inevitable, and stores like BB should support the competition.

It was a ballsy move, and everyone’s seen it by now, or can, somewhere online. I guess apple doesn’t want people to know the truth, cause compared to the new Honeycomb tablets the iPad 2 just doesn’t compare favorably.
