Best Buy cancels some Majora's Mask 3DS pre-orders

Earlier this month, Nintendo confirmed previous rumors that the new 3DS would be arriving for buyers in the United States next month, and ahead of that launch date pre-orders went up through various retailers. Among the pre-order options is a limited edition Majora's Mask version, something that was being offered by Best Buy, among other places. The February 13 release date is growing ever closer, but for some consumers it won't be quite as happy of an occasion as they anticipated.

Gamers have been waiting a while for the New Nintendo 3DS to arrive in North America, and so it is no surprise retailers are seeing a lot of demand. On top of that, the company will be releasing a couple of limited edition versions, one of which is the aforementioned Majora's Mask 3DS, which — as you might expect — is also seeing considerable demand.

Unfortunately for some gamers who elected to go through Best Buy, their pre-orders squeaked in just a little too late, and the end result was an unfortunate email. According to Kotaku, some buyers were sent an email recently telling them that the demand had eclipsed stock, and as a result there were no more units available.

Said the email sent to buyers, in part:

We're sorry but there is an issue with your pre-order. The popularity of Nintendo 3DS XL Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask Limited Edition Gold/Black exceeded the quantities made available to Best Buy. As a result, we are unable to fulfill all of the pre-orders received. We regret that your particular order has been canceled and we know that this is disappointing.

To help assuage the disappointment, Best Buy is offering those customers a $50 discount on the black or red 3DS XL instead.
