It seems to me that Nokia is going for affordable quality rather than the absolute best tech. And this might be a winning strategy for them. Not everyone can afford a $200-$400 phone especially if you have to buy several of them for your family. Microsoft has proven that the Windows Phone OS does not need a quad core processor with 1 GB of memory and a large battery to deliver a delightful experience. So Nokia can get away with delivering a very good smartphone experience at a price that approaches free (with carrier subsidies) which Android makers cannot do because of the high specs that Android requires for smooth operation. Given that the carriers have been losing a ton of money having to pay the high iPhone subsidies that Apple demands, it could be that phones like the Nokia Lumia 900 become the ones that carriers start pushing because they contribute more to their bottom lines. I wouldn't be too quick to write them off.

Lol? really? they are pushing lumia's because AT&T employees were given 25 million dollars worth of free lumia 900s. I laugh because the phone upon release is also being given to the general public for free after the rebate. Apparently 50% of smartphone users find their device confusing and unpleasant.

Well I bought the Nokia Lumia 900. I tried it out in the local AT&T store, the assistant it was one connected to the AT&T 4G and it was super fast BUT what impressed me was not how quickly it loaded my HTML 5 websites but that the interface was smooth, clean and easy to understand. So I dumped my iPhone 4 into a trash can and asked to buy a Cyan Lumia 900. "Sorry we're sold out". I scrambled around for my iPhone found it and thought ok I'll order it online, it has had such bad reviews in terms of being too little too late, I am bound to get one. The customer sales told me: "Sorry we're sold out"...what??!!
The pundits cannot be wrong? This is a single core, rubbish phone with a boring operating system compared to my iPhone. So why cannot I just buy it? Then I found it in some small franchise cell phone store but it was $199 and I had to wait until Xmas before I received my rebate. I'm sure if I crawled over the island or 5 boroughs I could buy it from a real AT&T store for $99 but it's sold out at AT&T downtown and online. The pundits are still insisting it's a disaster.

I've back ordered this phone and been given a one week to two weeks or maybe longer window for arrival. A great disaster for Nokia, MS and AT&T it seems because so many people have wanted to buy it for $99 or before the 21st for nothing.

I was also impressed by Nokia accepting the broadband issues were their fault and giving a 100% rebate to all customers who had bought and will buy before the 21st. Apple insisted I was holding my iPhone the wrong way. Then they offered me a free piece of rubber to cover the cool design. Nokia has made a great cell phone that already has a cover built into it.

I'm looking forward to leaving the Apple business model. Though, let it be said that there would be no Nokia Lumia 900 if it were not for Apple's iPhone.

The pundits are still insisting it’s a disaster.

I’ve back ordered this phone and been given a one week to two weeks or maybe longer window for arrival.

I’m looking forward to leaving the Apple business model. Though, let it be said that there would be no Nokia Lumia 900 if it were not for Apple’s iPhone.

Yeah, agreed. That is a serious limitation. It was ok when WP7 was first released but now it's definitely long in the tooth. Thankfully, WP8 will more than remedy this. It'll support not only higher resolutions but also faster and multicore cpus, NFC and a myriad of new form factors. It's no understatement that it can't arrive soon enough. Nokia and other OEMs are waiting desparately for WP8 to be released.

agrreing with many guys here . I want to make one statement how things change in a few years time. really some times life is so cruel. Nokia was so strong today its limping. But coming back to more technicalities I would suggest Elop said Symbian is burning thats no way look at Nokia N8 Nokia 808.
Symbian was one OS that allowed them to have low end touch phones like 5233 etc which used to be a best seller in india.

The simple truth is Elop got overconfident Asha phones are only good for one segment that buys dual sim with qwerty but he misses another hhuge segment where ppl want touch smart phones not fake smart phones like asha. and local and global players like samsung micromax etc have addressed withh android in under 11,000 INR price range.

So, Dear Nokia s40 is useless samsung has a dual sim android at Rs 8000/- do u think if i was the customer i will buy ur asha crap. U have still not addressed the portfolio gap, u announced Lumia 610 where is it it cud have given u huge sales but u ppl are sick idiots.

So eithr Nokia gets a new OS on lowend or try android for low end devices else Nokia will be in history books.
Samsung does that why can not Nokia. Its time to say good byee to s40. some ppl will say s40 is less fragmented wat the crap nokia can retain symbian 3 base code with belle UI as a steeping stone. U know actually 1 Ghz CPU on asha phones is a loosers strategy.. Nokia wtf ur ghz cpu does on that crap. either rebrand symbian belle and sell on low end devices with ghz cpu or get a new OS or join android.

Else please die in peace thank u.

Played with the Lumia 900 at the AT&T store today.

What a lovely piece of hardware...

I was expecting something less tha exciting with WP7.5, but discovered that the OS was buttery smooth on the device.

My main concerns are battery life because of all the animations on the "home" screen, screen resolution (800x480? Come on Nokia, you can do better than that!) and battery life. Other than that the Lumia felt like a step up from iPhone 4 in nearly every way...

Android is a disaster hacked together OS with steep hw requirements, fragmentation, and a host of issues. The only reason it sells well is because the market is FLOODED with devices and OEMs and carriers pushing them. But customer satisfaction for iOS and WP is far better than Android. The average consumer - unlike the techie fandroids that pervade tech forums - finds Android confusing and unpleasant, the only reason they went with it is because some store rep pitched the device -- they got it because there was nothing else (the only iPhone alternative). Go to an AT&T store NOW... what do you think are the reps pushing? Lumias.
