Mac OSX Snow Leopard Review

By Vincent Nguyen on Wednesday, Aug 26th 2009 6 Comments

Ask any Mac owner and they’ll likely tell you the Apple allure is a game of two halves: the reassuring hardware and the slick, consistent OS. Apple is finally delivering their latest version of OS X, v10.6 Snow Leopard, adding a new coat of polish to the company’s software prowess. SlashGear has been testing out Snow Leopard over the past few weeks, and we’ve found that perhaps its most satisfying aspect is that it upgrades things both visibly and less obviously, rather than one or the other. After the cut, why 64-bit matters, how Apple have streamlined the way you interact with your data, and why Snow Leopard might just be the bargain of the year.

Lenovo’s growing Idea-series of notebooks and desktops is joined by this, the IdeaCentre C300. A range of budget all-in-ones, the C300 packs a 20-inch display, DVD drive and serious levels of storage and RAM; however they also adopt Intel’s low-power Atom processors. Disappointing mismatch, or bargain second machine? Check out the full SlashGear review to find out.

You could talk for ages about where the Plantronics Discovery 975 fits into the company’s range, but the simplest explanation is that the Voyager PRO and Discovery 925 had a baby and it’s the new prodigal son. Combining the audio excellence of the Voyager PRO and the nifty charging-case of the Discovery 925, find out why we rate the Discovery 975 so highly after the cut.

There’s not a huge amount we can say about the HTC Touch Pro2 for T-Mobile that we didn’t say in our original review of the smartphone. Back then we described the Euro-version of the Pro2 as “a solid business buy and a strong contender for anybody prioritizing text-entry when mobile”, and neither has changed in its conversion to T-Mobile’s 3G bands. After the cut, our unboxing video, hands-on report and live photo gallery.

Glasses correct your vision and sunglasses stop you getting blinded by the sun; easy, right?  Not so fast, because if you talk to Gunnar Optiks, they’ll tell you that their lenses can do a whole lot more.  Stacked with high-grade machining and coatings, including an oleophobic layer similar to the screen of the iPhone 3GS, Gunnar Optiks promise a reduction in eye fatigue and improved vision.  The company has sent a pair of their latest pair over; check out the unboxing video after the cut.

Sonos introduced a much newly designed remote control – the Sonos Controller 200 (CR200). It fits nicely in one hand; featuring a 3.5-inch capacitive VGA touch-screen and a super easy to type on keyboard. The CR200 is easy to use; it turns on instantly, fast and reliably dedicated to your ultimate music experience. It can be used anywhere in your home all for a price of $349 ($50 less than its non-touchscreen predecessor, the CR100, went for), which includes the charging cradle.

It seems a long time since we played with a non-functional prototype of Samsung’s Mondi WiMAX MID back at Mobile World Congress in February.  Only last week the Windows Mobile 6.1 handheld saw its official launch, to take advantage of Clearwire’s slowly spreading CLEAR WiMAX network, so imagine our surprise when a Mondi dropped, unannounced, through the SlashGear letterbox.  After the cut, check out our walkthrough video and an initial hands-on gallery, together with some early feedback in advance of our full review.

Synaptics invited SlashGear to their headquarters in Santa Clara this week to take a look at their latest capacitive touch-panel technology.  The company has rebranded their existing ClearPad capacitive system to ClearPad 2000, so as to make room for their new flagship ClearPad 3000.  This new panel can recognize up to 10 simultaneous finger touches together with complex multi-finger gestures such as pinch, pivot-rotate and rotate, with reduced latency and increase accuracy over what we’ve seen from capacitive panels to-date.

You’d be forgiven for mistaking the D-Link DIR-685 Xtreme N Storage Router for a cheap digital photo frame, at least from just glancing at it.  Dominated by a 3.2-inch LCD display, and lacking obvious giveaways such as external antennas, it’s a stylish way to upgrade to draft-n WiFi.  There’s also plenty of interest inside, with an internal hard-drive bay and surprising file-sharing flexibility.  Have D-Link forgotten their connectivity basics, however, in the rush to fill the spec-sheet?  SlashGear set to finding out.

Lenovo IdeaPad S10-2 Review

By Vincent Nguyen on Wednesday, Jul 15th 2009 1 Comment

As evolutionary updates go you don’t get more basic than a cosmetic refresh, so imagine our surprise to find Lenovo guilty of just such a relaunch.  The Lenovo IdeaPad S10-2 takes the company’s original S10 netbook and, most obviously, reworks the casing; is that enough to keep the S10-2 near the top of the netbook leaderboard?  SlashGear set to finding out.
