AT&T 4G: Not all HSPA+ Phones are Created Equal

At the Samsung/AT&T event today, the Samsung Infuse 4G was officially announced, and slated to be available May 15th. Our hands-on is here. It was also called the "first phone to support hspa+/hsupa at launch”. It has a dual antenna, just like the Motorola Atrix, but unlike the Atrix, it will have HSUPA enabled at launch. 4G comes in many different flavors, not all created equally. Read on for more details. We're here at the Samsung AT&T event, and the big announcement is...the Samsung Infuse 4G. Philip Berne has called this phone "remarkably light", weighing less than the Nexus S, even with a screen that's half an inch larger, and with a bigger battery. Plus, it has that stunning, tear-inducing Super AMOLED Plus display that we love so much on the Droid Charge. If AT&T can get this on the market super quick, they might be the first to do so. This morning, we are looking forward to the Samsung Event at 4pm EST. Will it be the Infuse? Will they announce a date for the Galaxy S II for the US? The hot new phone has been selling like crazy in South Korea, and our review unit knocked our socks off. We'll be sure to let you know what happens at the event. Meanwhile, Samsung has revealed a "hybrid tablet" with SENS-240 navigation. But how useful is it, really? The incomparable Chris Davies has a great column this morning analyzing Verizon's Bliss "phone for ladies". Really Verizon? Aren't we ladies smart enough to download our own apps? Less TVs in the US, is it the Economy or the Internet?

I am considered an oddity among some of my friends and family because I don’t have cable. I do have a TV, but I rely on DVDs, Netflix and my Roku player for my television viewing. When someone asks me if I’ve seen a commercial, I just smile and say “no”. In fact, my daughter (at 4 years old) was shocked the first time she watched Nickelodeon when the commercials came on. She had never seen one. But maybe my odd choice is becoming less odd. A new report by Nielsen shows that for the first time since 1992, there are less US households with television sets. To be sure, the vast majority of households still own TVs, but the percentage has gone from 98.9 percent to 96.7 percent. Part of the explanation is the economy, and the change to digital. But is there another explanation?

Mass Effect 3 Delayed Until 2012

One of the most highly anticipated games of the year, Mass Effect 3, will be delayed by Electronic Arts until 2012. The company made the announcement on the game's Facebook page, saying they want to make sure the game is the best it can be. Mass Effect 3 was originally due out in Fall 2011. The response of fans on the page seems mostly positive, saying that it's better to make sure the game is right rather than rush the release. Read The Full Story

Apple iOS 4.3.3 with “Bug Fix” for Location Tracking Now Available

We have been closely following the iPhone 4 location tracking saga, and reported on Monday that Apple was getting ready to release iOS 4.3.3 to make it possible to clear your cache of location tracking, and to turn off the tracking completely. Now iOS 4.3.3 is available via iTunes for AT&T's iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPads, and the fourth-gen iPod touch. There is a separate update, iOS 4.2.8, for Verizon's iPhone. Read The Full Story

Sony Responds to the House of Representatives Hearing on Data Theft

The attack on Sony's Playstation Network is getting serious attention from the U.S. House of Representatives today, as the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade held a hearing today. The subject? “The Threat of Data Theft to American Consumers.” Sony had declined to appear at the hearing, but Kazuo Hirai, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sony Computer Entertainment America, has sent in written responses to questions posed by the subcommittee. We have followed the PSN story very closely, as Sony has struggled to deal with the "very carefully planned, very professional, highly sophisticated criminal cyber attack" on its network. With BlackBerry World still rolling on, we've got plenty of exciting RIM news this morning, but first, make sure you check out the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer review by our man Chris Davies. Also, Asus will only be able to build 10K of these tabs per month, when they wanted to build 300K. But they plan to have the bottleneck in component supplies cleared up by June. You can either purchase the iPad 2 directly from them or send yours in. There are options in solid finish, metallic, or pearl, and you can customize not only the case color, but the Apple logo color and the button as well. Angry Birds Rio Gets First Update Next Week

Have you played Angry Birds Rio? According the the Angry Birds Facebook page, the first update to the game is on its way next week. The update is called "Jungle Escape", and can be seen ready to be unlocked in the screenshot after the cut. It promises more "marmoset-mauling action" and "juicy secrets to discover." The biggest news this morning, of course, is that Osama bin Laden is dead, killed in a raid by the US Military. And the news was inadvertently broken first on Twitter by one Sohaib Athar, who is now begging media to leave him alone so he can get some sleep! In other news, BlackBerry World is happening now, and we are loaded up with BlackBerry news, including the news that the BlackBerry PlayBook will be getting updates every few weeks to get the somewhat disappointing software up to speed. Already, there is news that the PlayBook will be getting Video Chat and Facebook apps in May. Good news this morning, with Verizon's 4G LTE back online in time for the launch of the DROID Charge. But this is a black eye for Verizon, casting doubt on the reliability of their network, and leaving subscribers to wonder why they had to use a workaround to get 3G. We have a hands-on of the new white iPhone 4 that Chris Davies visited with in London, complete with a video and a comparison to the Samsung Galaxy S II. Also, users that had manually updated their Nook Color found their e-reader bricked after the 1.2 update was installed. No word yet on a fix, just that "engineers are investigating the issue". Also, the Huawei lawsuit, RIM's questionable OS update, the G-Slate, more on the Sony PSN story, plus the Samsung Galaxy S II launch in Korea. Lots more after the cut. Read The Full Story
