The LG G-Slate that was introduced to the world at CES (then seemingly disappeared) has been further detailed by T-Mobile. The impressive Honeycomb-based tablet will be a direct competitor to the Motorola XOOM when it’s made available this spring.

On-board the device will boast a NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor which will power Android 3.0 Honeycomb, 32GB of internal storage, gyroscope and an accelerometer. The main feature of the device will be its set of on-board cameras. On the back, the tablet sports stereoscopic rear-facing cameras – one of these will serve as a 5MP still camera with flash for capturing shots with the device. On the front you’ll find a 2MP camera for video chat over T-Mobile’s HSPA+ and WiFi networks. Also supported is the output of 1080p video playback from its built-in HDMI port.

The device will ship “this spring,” but pricing has yet to be determined. But, if we know anything about tablets, we can expect it to be somewhere near the Motorola XOOM.

We all know Google is pushing big into the NFC market with the inclusion of support in the Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system, and it looks as if Apple is readying themselves to be ready for the next generation of mobile payment systems with two new job listings on their corporate site.

Among the required areas of knowledge for these jobs is RFID, which s a type of near-field communication (NFC). Essentially Apple is looking for a hardware developer to help turn the iPhone into an “e-wallet” for transactions.

These job listings line up pretty well with recent rumor that Apple is readying an “e-wallet” strategy for both the iPhone 5 and second generation iPad. Some strategists even believe that Apple could have its own mobile payment service up and running as early as mid-2011 which is the expected launch date for the next iPhone.

As to how Apple might implement such a system, rumors are circulating around payments going through its iTunes payment service. Hopefully we will see more of this develop as we near the announcement of the second generation iPad and iPhone 5.

Job listings: [1] [2]

AMD has announced that the company has sold more than one million Fusion APUs for entry-level notebooks and netbooks. Not only is their Fusion line doing strong, the company is now boasting over 35 million units sold of their Direct X 11-class processing units.

The commercial adoption of the company’s APUs is not surprising, low-power solutions are drawing a lot of interest lately and AMD seems to be leading the calvary since it’s ship date of early November.

During the company’s 4th quarter conference call [Press Release] Thomas Seifert, interim chief executive officer of AMD, stated that momentum for the APUs is growing strong. “Industry momentum for Fusion is strong and growing. OEM adoption of Brazos is excellent. We shipped more than 1 million Brazos platforms in its debut quarter to world class OEMs including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo, MSI, Samsung, Sony and Toshiba.”

With more and more focus going to lightweight powerful notebooks, we can expect the industry adoption of AMD’s APUs grow significantly over 2011.

Apple is clearly going with a “separate, but equal approach,” as the devices are featured side by side performing the exact same tasks.

NVIDIA was a huge player in the mobile arena at this year’s CES. Their dual-core Tegra 2 processors that will be included in this year’s upcoming “super phones” are expected to completely change the mobile processing market, and now it seems that they are planning a “Tegra 2 3D” chip that will start shipping this Spring.

According to a leaked slide meant for the Mobile World Congress presentation, the Tegra 2 3D will be clocked at 1.2GHz and will be based on a Dual Cortex A9. According to this slide, NVIDIA will start production this quarter with units ready for devices in Spring of this year.

This is a bold, yet understandable, move for the company as all of the world’s focus seems to be shifting to 3D display technology. The chip is said to be powerful enough to power a Master Image TN-LCD display using cell parallax which would allow the mobile device to create a 3D effect, similar to Nintendo’s 3DS.

Looks like we will have a lot of impressive 3D-ready mobile devices set for the second half of 2011!

One of the more overlooked phones that was announced at this year’s CES was the LG Revolution. Being the first 4G handset from LG, the Revolution sports a large 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen, Android 2.2, and dual cameras.

One of the major focuses of the device is its ability to serve as a 4G wireless hotspot for up to 8 devices. Bringing 4G to the masses, the Revolution proved to be fast, but only “mid-grade fast.” With our hands-on time with the LG device, we only saw a bit of lag. Maps didn’t render as fast as they did on the Atrix or Samsung 4G LTE Smartphone, which is expected, but it still performed well.

The device features a 1GHz Qualcomm processor, but compared to Samsung’s we were definitely see a bit of a slowdown. Check out our hands-on with the device from the Verizon Press Conference.

2011 is definitely the year of 4G, it seems everyone is getting 4G ready, and with the push comes an array of new smartphones and 4G connected devices. One of these phones, the Samsung 4G LTE Smartphone, was one of the most impressive and refined devices we got to handle at Verizon’s Press Event and we gave it the full hands-on treatment.

The Samsung 4G LTE Smartphone was definitely fast and super responsive. Movement through menus was fluid and Google Maps ran without any apparent lag. Coupled with Verizon’s ultra-fast 4G network, we saw pages load extremely fast and scrolling was incredibly smooth.

Still officially unnamed, the 4G LTE Smartphone will hit Verizon the first half of this year. Be sure to check out our hands-on video with the unit below.

Not everything showcased at CES is high-end advanced user products, Samsung was also showing off their consumer-level point and shoot cameras at CES this year. Bringing in an all new universal UI, Samsung will focus not only on quality on their upcoming cameras, but also usability.

The new UI is obviously based on cell phone operating systems. Samsung is pushing heavy into the app market on their devices, first with their TV and Samsung Apps UI, and now with the consumer-grade point and shoot interfaces Samsung thinks it’s the best way for users to navigate around software.

On the showroom floor, we saw two of their upcoming devices – the ST700 and PL170. The ST700 boasts a 16 megapixel sensor, dual screens (3-inch touch-screen LCD on the back and 1.8-inch LCD on the front). Hitting the market in March, the device will sell for $279.99.

The PL170 is also a 16 megapixel camera and will be a more entry level camera when compared to the similar ST700. Sporting a 3-inch LCD and 1.5-inch front-facing LCD the device is very slim and lightweight all while feeling like a quality durable product. Also available in March, the PL170 will retail for $199.99.

Note: The PL170 we saw on the showroom floor did not have a front-facing LCD even though the Press Release and info sheet stated it should have. No word yet on whether it was just a prototype unit or the PL170 will just not feature a front-facing screen. But, it lacking a front-facing display would explain the price difference for two seemingly similar cameras.

CES is just about wrapping up and we stopped by the BlueAnt booth to see what they have planned for 2011. BlueAnt always impresses, and it looks like their 2011 lineup will be no different bringing many new Bluetooth products to market. The first set we got to test was the Q2 Platinum which is the new finish for the Q2.

The headset was very durable and had an adequate amount of weight to it, without being too heavy, of course. The audio was crystal clear, and even on the showroom floor we could hear the other end of the conversation. Features include the ability to read out text messages if your device is supported, caller name announcement, and wind suppression up to 22mph with Wind Armour Technology.

The headsets are not only for calling. They will allow you to listen to audio from music, podcasts and mobile GPS turn-by-turn directions proving them to be an ultra-versitile headset. Available now, the Q2 retails for around $69.99.

As we move into the technology age we are becoming more and more attached to our devices and would like to bring them more places. Soultra has helped with this want and has announced plans for their solar powered Soultra XL sound system.

Being an ultra-rugged and splashproof speaker system, the Soultra XL is ready to handle the elements while you enjoy your music outdoors. The device is powered by a lithium ion battery which is charged by a 72 square inch enhanced monocrystal solar panel.

Sporting 8 speaker drivers (2x tweeters, 2x woofers, and 4x passive radiators) the system was surprising loud all while being incredibly clear. Performance wise we were told that the system will take 5 hours to fully charge in the sun, which would yield 4 hours of playback.

Last year’s Soultra is available now for $200 and is a more compact solution with Aspen Green and Crimson Graphite colors coming soon. The Soultra XL will be shipping the second quarter of this year for an estimated retail of $300.

The body of the device is extremely rugged and you will not have to worry about it being exposed to the elements as it’s advertised as “weathertight.” The device features a built in LED flashlight, internal re-chargable Li-Ion battery, digital e-zoom and will capture images in multiple resolutions. The device will sell for $1,999 and is available now for all outdoor enthusiasts.

As television sets get slimmer, full surround sound systems are looking more and more out of place. However, along with TV innovation comes audio innovation and Sonic Emotion, a 3D sound company in business for over 8 years, has just announced their new sound line-up for the 2011 calendar year.

Focusing heavily on small clutter-free solutions, Sonic Emotion’s 3D sound technology has been embedded into both the Coby CSMP88 3D Soundbar and the Haier Evoke Series 3D Soundbar with docking station. From what we heard, amidst the loud happenings of CES, the sound was very impressive. Bass was great and the sound was of a quality that would be refreshing for any avid home entertainment fan.

The Coby CSMP88 3D Soundbar is available now for $99 and the Haier Evoke Series 3D Soundbar has yet to be given a release or pricing.

Sleek Audio has been known for both their high end over-ear and custom molding earphones, and we have gotten an up close and personal look with their new 50 Cent Platinum Headphones. Although they had no working units for us to demo, the only working set was with 50 Cent himself, we were provided with further details of the product as well as captured a few shots.

The headphones will be both wireless and wired when you need them to be and will feature the company’s Kleer technology. Being a “Wireless Hybrid” the headphones will come with a wireless jack for cordless streaming, but will also feature a wired cable with microphone if you run out of power.

Music controls are done on the headpieces themselves with one controlling volume while the other controls play/pause features. No word was said on when we can expect these to be available but there was hints at the pair being priced around $350-$400.

Loksak has been well known within the military and water sports market as their series of waterproof bags for electronic devices have been the superior go-to option. Now they’re bringing their award winning innovation to the consumer market offering up 2 new bags that provide water, dust, sand, and air proof bags for handheld electronics.

The aLOKSAK has been named the “World’s Best Outdoor iPhone Accessory” by the editor of National Geographic Adventure Magazine.

Once a device is put into the bag, the screen remains fully functional. Our hands-on time with the LOKSAK proved that access to the bags was surprisingly easy, just like a normal zip-lock bag. In fact, it’s so easy it was worrisome to us that there would be immense leaking if left underwater for long. However, we were assured by the LOKSAK team that the zipper will not leak, very impressive indeed.

The bags are extremely low-priced and definitely worth the money starting at only $6.49 for the aLOKSAK 5X4″ 3-pack.

Combing superior audio quality with impressive design, the iTam tam is definitely an interesting furniture piece. The dock is compatible with all docking iPod models and boasts 3 independent speakers, 1 subwoofer, and 2 circular placed midrange tweeters.

The design is based off of the 1968 Tamtam stool and can fit in pretty much anywhere with a modern decor. Available now, the stool retails for around $500.

As consumer camcorders and video recording devices become smaller and smaller, users are using them more for capturing the special moments of their lives. However, one problem with this using a smaller device for recording is that the audio quality isn’t optimal. Solving this problem, Scosche has launched a series of Bluetooth enabled external microphones for use with the iPhone 4, iPod touch and a separate device for the Flip UltraHD 2.

The iPhone microphone will be connected via Bluetooth, and will allow the user to record audio from the mic after pairing.

Scosche was named CES Innovations 2011 Design and Engineering Awards Honoree for their Flip freedoomMIC model. This microphone will connect to the Flip UltraHD 2 via USB and will also allow for wireless audio transmission.

Both of the microphones will retail for $99 and are still waiting for approval/certification, but we should expect to see them in March of this year.

Just as we all thought, CES was all about tablet computing. Many competitors announced their tablets and we will faced with many options for our tablet needs in 2011. However, as we all knew, the key player was the Motorola XOOM. The Honeycomb-based tablet is not only powerful hardware-wise, its Honeycomb software ran flawlessly on top of its hardware.

The actual device was named CES 2011 Best in Show as opposed to Honeycomb, which was expected by many. The XOOM will be the number one competitor for the iPad and upcoming iPad 2 as the tablet market truly starts to heat up in the 2011 calendar year.

For those unaware, the device sports a dual-core Tegra 2 processor, HDMI-out, front- and back-facing cameras, and a 10-inch display all while being connected with Verizon’s blazing fast 4G LTE network.

Now, from what we’ve seen the device looks extremely impressive. From the live demo, seen below, it was running Honeycomb impressively smoothly. We can only hope that once we actually get our hands on the device, we will still be impressed.

This year’s CES is heavily focused on moving the entire household into the digital age. Samsung is also pushing further with the introduction of their new RF4289 Internet connected refrigerator.

The unit will feature an eight-inch WiFi connected display that will not only control basic functions of the refrigerator, but it will also keep you connected with your family and social life. The touchscreen enables the user to check weather, adjust temperature controls, and view Twitter and other social feeds.

The device also features the company’s new Smart Divider that allows you to further customize your drawers to organize food.

This marks Samsung’s continued venture into the world of applications. First with the internet and app enabled TVs and now with this refrigerator, Samsung is truly connected the home in a way we have not yet seen from a single company.

CES is in full swing, and companies are showcasing their latest devices. Not all devices showcased are high end user electronics, and we also see many small products whose innovation can get overlooked with such an event. One of these is Flir’s new i3 Thermal Camera. Providing ground breaking technology at an affordable price that has yet to be seen for such a device, the i3 is the best option for any inspecting team.

With our hands-on time with the camera we found it to be incredibly accurate. The device sports a 3,600 pixel high-resolution 2.8-inch LCD display. Sensitivity on the device is outstanding, with a sensitivity rating of just .1°C.

The device also sports a rugged, lightweight design, coupled with it’s low price point of $1,195 this will be the ultimate device for anyone on a budget, or looking to provide thermal camera to their whole inspecting team.

3D TV’s were also pushed hard at this year’s CES. Samsung has stated that they have sold just over 1 million 3D-equipped TV’s in 2010, and they still see it as the next frontier in viewing. However, just as 3D visuals offer up a new experience, users are looking for an audio option that can accompany the new 3D experience.

Samsung has showcased their new 3D Surround Sound system at this year’s CES. This new 5-speaker system not only pushes sound horizontally, but pushed sound towards the ceiling so it can cascade downward providing an extremely real and immersive sound experience.

We got to experience this sound demo, and we were highly impressed. The speakers offered up rich sound, and coupled with 3D visuals it was an experience we have not yet seen in the living room.

As consumers become more mobile, users are opting for more of a laptop experience compared to being stuck at a desktop. However, as we all know, the small screen and keyboard on your laptop is not always sufficient. Samsung has now solved this issue with Central Station.

Central Station seamlessly connects all elements of the of your mobile computer, including notebook PC, display, peripherals, network, and AV, to its own monitors.

Here’s how it works. Instead of plugging in all of your peripherals such as keyboard, mouse, printer, etc. to your desktop, the user will plug them into the central hub. Then, once the USB connector is inserted into a laptop, bring the laptop within 3.2 feet of the Central Station and you will be immediately presented with a full desktop experience right from your laptop.

The monitor and hub solutions come in both 23- and 27-inch options and will both sport WLED backlighting when it’s made available in March of this year.

With our hands-on time with the device, we noticed right off the bat that it’s actually really fast, running Microsoft’s Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Overall, the device looks like it could be a great notebook for someone in the market, looking for an incredibly thin device but don’t want to go for the competition. Check out our hands-on images below.

Continuing with their show floor routine at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, Samsung provided some hands-on time with their new Samsung 7 Series device. The company has already officially announced the device, and considering its unique sliding form-factor, and the tablet-like appearance, we wanted to make sure to get our hands on it.

The Samsung Sliding PC 7 Series is a strange mix between a tablet and a laptop, or notebook. Designed to function primarily as a tablet, but featuring a slide-out hardware keyboard, it’s meant for those who want the tablet experience, but also need a hardware keyboard handy at all times. It’s running Windows 7 Home Premium, and features WiFi and 3G connectivity. There’s Bluetooth, and the device will support Samsung App integration.

For those who need to have accessories, owners will be able to connect their USB peripherals and HDMI connectors to the device as well. Check out the images below for the close-up shots of the device.

One of the most impressive TVs we saw on the CES 2011 showroom floor was definitely the new Samsung 75″ LED display. Being touted as the “Worlds Largest Full HD 3D LED TV,” the screen was the most impressive 3D HD display we have seen.

Samsung wasn’t allowing anyone to dive into menus or get to use the massive television, but from the video output we saw the video was very stunning. However, all of the demo reel was slow moving, high quality video, if the device was running a fast paced movie, the end result might be a bit different.

No word on pricing, but we can imagine that it’s not going to be cheap when it’s made available later this year. But, if you’re looking for this device, and have the money, all you will need to worry about is if the 75″ display will fit in your living room space.

Samsung made sure that charging the glasses was easy and straight forward, by letting owners set them on a docking station to charge them up. The glasses are also prescription ready. They were light enough to hold, and are certainly not the heaviest glasses we’ve ever experienced. Check out the pictures below.

The device will not only be the thinnest player that pushes out 3D HD content, but it will also upscale Blu-ray discs to 3D in real time.

The device will also be highly connected to the internet. Samsung is pushing social media on their consumer TVs offering up the ability to connect to YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter among other services.

No pricing has been stated thus far, but we expect the player to shift in the first half of this year.

Samsung is pushing hard into the DSLR market, announcing many products, the NX11 will be the top of the line and will feature Samsung’s new i-Function lenses. The device will replace the older NX10 and will be one of the first devices compatible with with the new i-Function range of lenses which offer up the ability to change shooting settings with the press of a button on the lens itself.

The device will ship with an 18-55mm i-Function zoom lens and will be fully compatible with the company’s new wide array of lenses. Around back of the device there is a 3-inch AMOLED display with an electronic viewfinder and the device will sport both a built-in flash and hotshoe.

In addition to the NX11, Samsung will also launch two new i-Function lenses – a 20mm pancake and a 20-50mm zoom lens. The device along with the new lenses currently have no release date or pricing, but if the NX10 can serve as any precedent for pricing, we should expect the camera to retail for around $600.

When connected to an Android device, the user can control features of the camera such as zoom and the actual shutter. This feature would be much welcome when taking family or group shots and provides a flexibility we have yet to see in cameras.

Further connecting the phone and camera, once an image is taken, the user will have the option of geotagging the pictures from their phones GPS chip. The device will go on sale this march for around $200.

Creating a seamless experience, the Samsung printing application is available for download and will allow printing to any WiFi connected Samsung printer. From an Android device, the user will have to use the application to print and can choose which printer from within the print screen.

Samsung Galaxy Tab users have the printing service built directly into the core OS. Users can print from Memos, Browser and other applications and will not have to open the application to print, although the application is available. The Samsung Mobile Print/Scan app will be available for free this winter, and will be built-in to the Galaxy Tab beginning this year. The application will be compatible with all existing and new Samsung wireless and network printers.

Press Release:

LAS VEGAS, NV – Samsung Electronics America Inc., a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Corporation, today announced the Samsung MobilePrint app, its first application for printing from Android and iOS mobile devices to Samsung wireless printers, at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The MobilePrint app allows users to print emails, web pages, maps, photos, and Microsoft Office and PDF files faster when traveling for business, working remotely, or visiting with friends and family. The solution will be on display at CES in Central Hall booth #12006, January 6-9, 2011.

“Over the past year Samsung has built its leadership in the printer space with the introduction of innovative features like the one-touch print button and AnyWeb Print software for easier web page prints,” said Ken Colby, director of printer marketing at Samsung Electronics Enterprise Business Division. “We are kicking off 2011 by expanding the depth of our printer solutions with the Samsung MobilePrint app which offers a convenient solution for printing from a mobile device, a very real need for today’s smartphone-centric lifestyle.”

HASSLE-FREE, SEAMLESS CONNECTIVITY
The Samsung MobilePrint app is available for Android smartphones, Android tablets and iOS based devices and can be downloaded from the relevant application store or marketplace. It will detect and connect directly to Samsung wireless printers in the area via WiFi or a network link. Samsung Mobile Print/Scan app users can then print directly from their devices with the click of a button, eliminating the hassle of driver installations and network configurations.

SIMPLE EDITING AND SCANNING
Samsung’s Mobile/Print Scan app also allows users to quickly review and edit documents that have been scanned into a local Samsung printer. Using this feature, mobile devices can detect documents scanned to a local multifunction printer (MFP) or, alternatively, be sent the scanned document by the MFP user. This is an ideal solution for editing document layouts, as it allows mobile edits to be made to the scan’s image quality and file type, and provides a choice between color or black and white scans.

FASTER PHOTO AND TRAVEL ITINERARY PRINTS
Samsung’s Mobile Print/Scan app brings a new dimension to mobile photography by providing users with a way to select and print multiple images simultaneously through their Samsung device’s photo gallery. It also saves time for frequent travelers who need to print e-tickets, flight confirmations or other itineraries at the last minute by using their mobile device’s SD card.

The Samsung Mobile Print/Scan app will be available for free this winter. It will be built-in to the Galaxy Tab beginning in 2011. The application will be compatible with all existing and new Samsung wireless and network printers.

Teens and distracted driving are the two biggest problems on the roads today. Technology company, inthinc Technology Solutions Inc, has a product ready for worried parents or business users looking to track employees. The tiwiFamily is built to make teen driving not only safer, but allow parents to keep tabs on their driving teens.

Once set up, the devices allow parents to set limitations in regards to location and speed. For example, a parent can set up where the teen’s school is on a map and will be texted once the teen arrives to school and again whenever the leave the designated zone. The device will also keep track of your current speed and compare it to the speed limit, if you’re over the limit will be notified via vocal warning.

Because the device sends text messages and communicates with the internet, a data plan is required for use. Data plans for the devices range $24.99 a month to $49.99 a month and will allow unlimited text message updates. The tiwiFamily retails for $299-$599 depending on the data plan selected and is available now.

Press Release:

LAS VEGAS (2011 International CES, Booth #2334) — JAN. 6, 2011 — inthinc Technology Solutions Inc. (www.inthinc.com), a company centered on telematics, fleet solutions and driving safety, today announced it is helping prevent distracted driving by implementing cell phone and texting restrictions in both its commercial and consumer driving safety systems. inthinc’s teen driving safety system, tiwiFamily, with new distracted driving prevention was named a CES Innovations 2011 Design and Engineering Award honoree.
For teen drivers, inthinc leverages technology that puts customers’ cell phones in a “safe mode,” restricting calls, texts or other apps while the vehicle is in motion. The technology will integrate with the inthinc customer portal where parents can monitor cell phone usage while a vehicle is in operation along with other driving behaviors such as speeding, aggressive driving and seatbelt usage.

For commercial fleets, inthinc integrates technology that combines vehicle telematics such as trip information, location (GPS), vehicle speed and so on with cell phone data including phone calls and text messaging so fleet managers can track whether any mobile phones are being used while driving. Companies can leverage this information to reward positive behavior and take corrective steps to reduce risky and dangerous behavior.
“According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving killed almost 5,500 people last year and injured another 500,000,” said Todd Follmer, CEO of inthinc Technology Solutions. “We, along with our technology partners, are working diligently to provide practical and effective solutions to help curb distracted driving.”
Distracted driving prevention will be available as an add-on to both consumer and commercial driving safety solutions in the first quarter of 2011. It will be available to both new and existing customers.

About inthinc’

Audio recognition programs have been around for a few years now allowing users to listen to a song and then have a program analyze it and push out the track information. Now this is possible with video. Ranging from recorded TV to movies, VideoSurf allows the user to determine exactly what’s playing just from five seconds of captured video.

How it works is that VideoSurf will display from the camera on your Android device and ask to be shown the source video for five seconds. After the video has been analyzed, which will be ultra fast over WiFi or Verizon’s LTE network, you will be presented with results including the TV show, episode, runtime, and and full cast list.

VideoSurf has an exclusive partnership with Verizon and the application will launch pre-installed on all the Verizon 4G LTE devices announced today such as the DROID BIONIC, HTC ThunderBolt, LG Revolution, and the Samsung 4G LTE Smartphone.

Samsung took the stage today and showed off a currently unnamed 4G smartphone. The device features a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus touchscreen display which is proving to be one of the most impressive looking displays we have seen and we gave it the hands-on treatment.

Even under immense production lights, the screen proved to be very bright and clear. It’s definitely the best Samsung display we have seen so far on a mobile device.

Hardware wise the device must be packing. After our tests with Google Maps and the stock web browser, we were very impressed with the device. Scrolling was very fluid and Maps rendered content very quickly.

This looks like a very impressive device for Verizon’s 4G network. Combining powerful hardware and connectivity to Verizon’s 4G, this will be one of the devices to beat when it’s released the first half of this year.
