Google Maps aren't perfect, but if someone has attained enough common sense, they would have checked out the details out before going out there. The old paper street maps were only more reliable because the company publishing it was putting in the effort and trying make money off of them. The Internet maps don't, you get what you paided for.
Police were covering their butts and keep Darwin award winners from getting themselves in trouble in the boonies.

Seriously ... if you were not local, with no knowledge of the conditions there and relying on an accurate paper map, and you ended up running a 30 foot truck through that road "since nobody told me it was such a small dirt track" ... what would the Colac authorities have to say ?

Issue a warning on the paper map even though it was accurate and it was purely the judgement of the driver in question ?

Shouldn't they be putting up enough signage at those roads to warn motorists of the impending risks for "bigger than saloon car' vehicles of the roads limited girth instead ?? Somebody is not doing his job right if you want to be objective here.

There is indeed a road there, and as sophisticated as Google Maps is, it's not quite capable of making a quality judgement about the road or it's capacity for traffic.Google is giving accurate directions to destinations on the road in question. The problem isn't stemming from the fact that an entire city was misplaced as was the case with Apple Maps. That should have been caught from the start and fixed before the app was released. One could make the argument here that Apple Maps would be better because it wouldn't be able to accurately direct you to a destination on the supposedly dangerous road. You'd end up miles away from where you want to be, but at least you'd be on a safe road, eh?

I wonder how long it took them to dig up this story? As soon as Apple started getting bad press for the warning by police not to use their app, I'm sure the Apple-loving media kicked into high gear trying to find a similar example of something dangerous with Google. If this is the best they could come up with, that just goes to show you what a huge difference there is between the two map apps.

iOS has Apple Maps, Nokia Maps and Google Maps, none of which is deemed safe in Japan and Australia. I start thinking that it's IOS the issue since Nokia Lumia 920 users have no issues with Nokia Drive & Transport.
