I also pre-ordered the Atrix yesterday and opted to not purchase the laptop dock as well. The mandatory tethering option I'd need to modify my data plan to include was a major part in the decision, however I also couldn't justify spending so much money on a "laptop" dock that was useless without the phone. I did opt for the HD multimedia dock so I could add on USB devices and I believe a HDMI-connected monitor. If this ends up providing me something like a "desktop experience" I personally still think that's a win.

Technically, the Atrix is not 4g. It runs HSPA+. It won't run LTE when AT&T launches the real 4g network. It's speeds are capable of 14mps where true 4g runs at 56mps. It is fast but AT&T is being quite deceptive about their current "4g" network.

$499 for something that is a brick without the phone is a monumental fail. If the laptop dock ran software on its own without the phone that would be one thing, but without the phone the thing is a paperweight. There is no way that I will ever pay $499 for a paperweight. AT&T needs to lay of the greedy crack pipe. It's bad enough that they are calling the connection between the phone and the dock tethering. Idiots. Tethering is sharing your connection with another device, not using the same device in a dock!

In other words, if a carrier is dealing with it it will be pricey. . . thanks for purchasing.

They can argue what they like, but for me personally they are not competing against a tablet with the Atrix but a netbook/phone combination. One of the main (perhaps THE main) point of having a tablet form factor is to have a larger screen than a phone without having the extra weight and bulk of a keyboard permanently attached. I would rather pay for a true tablet and get either a keyboard case or a separate bluetooth keyboard if I felt the occasional need for one.

There is not point in purchasing a phone and their laptop attachment for that price when I can have a phone and a real netbook with more processing power, more flexibility for applications and not much more weight (maybe a pound) for the same price or less.

This is mind-numbingly, jaw-droppingly idiotic.

The Atrix isn't a netbook... the Atrix dock certainly isn't a netbook.

But the DOCK ALONE is priced more than a netbook. For $500, what does the dock do - alone (no phone docked in it) compared to a $500 netbook? Less than nothing. The dock should be $250.
Major fail.

And how do you compare something to something that it isn't?
It isn't a tablet - it's much more a netbook than a tablet. How do you say you are competing with a tablet? Is it even a touchscreen?

That would be like Kawasaki saying "Our new sportbike costs $25,000... because our competition isn't motorcycles, it's sports cars. I think you'll find it competitive when you price it against sports cars."
