AT&T iPhone 3G questionWith less than two weeks until the iPhone 3G launches in the US, AT&T are finally opening up a little about pricing details.  While the headline was Steve Jobs’ promise of a $199 entry-level price point, that left many users already tied into non-iPhone contracts wondering how much exactly an upgrade would cost them.  We now know that those customers not eligible for an upgrade will have to pay $399 for an 8GB iPhone 3G and $499 for the 16GB version.

Read on for news of contract-free iPhones direct from AT&T!

Another interesting - and long awaited - development is official PAYG iPhones in the US, and AT&T has revealed that it will eventually be selling the handset for $599 and $699 (for the 8GB and 16GB models respectively).  No timescale has been given.

The carrier has also clarified the contracts on offer, what minutes are included and details of the iPhone 2.0 software, which will be available as a free download for existing owners.  They’ve also been answering some of our readers’ questions in an iPhone 3G Q&A, so if you’re still confused leave a comment and we’ll try to put it to AT&T.  Head on over to iPhone Buzz for all the details!

    Who said it’s unlocked?

    PAYG phones are simlocked.

This doesn’t make sense to me. AT&T’s early termination fee is $175, and it’s pro-rated so that you’ll likely pay even less.

Even at the full amount, you could pay $175 to get out of your contract, then pay $199 for the phone as a “new” customer, saving $25 (or more).

    What am I missing here?

I am amazing how this ETF of $175 continues to be mentioned. Why does everyone take it for granted that this is what AT&T will charge as the ETF for the iPhone. Want to bed it’s it’s closer to $300 to terminate your contract?

I meant to say, “I am amazed.” Not even my wife thinks I am “amazing”…

This is ridiculous. This is the ideal practice of capitalism! In other countries, it is illegal to do such a thing. Someone should start a petition and sue AT&T for being such a manipulative *****

I am a current att customer that upgraded to a non-iphone in feb-2008. I am not able to get upgrade pricing until july-2009. How can they say some people can upgrade in 3 months and others can upgrade in over 12 months.

Basically they can say it will cost one person this much and it will cost you this other amount. Their upgrade pricing policy is based on some shady practices.

Also, if i wantd to get a new iphone this month it will cost me $399 AND I have to sign up for another 2 years instead of just continuing the contract of an additional 2 years I did when I got the other phone in feb 08. Their policies blow.

when he makes the login said:

    Last payment received $325.77

    total amount due: $287.27

    325.77+287.27= $613.04 for two months!!!!!

Dude, if you buy an i-phone think about & get the unlimited plan for $99.99+Tax it is better pay $200.00+Tax for two months than $613.04+!!!!

sorry for my English, it’s not that good.

i was suckered into trying out a sony-ericsson phone with at&t service when they told me i could do so for 2 weeks.
it didn’t perform so i took it back for a refund, etc. within those 2 weeks.
well, at the store, “they” (good guys in sf and at&t) didn’t really let me out and i had my credit rating dented as a result and had to pay them (at&t) 150$ a year later (for 2 weeks of phone use).
i hate at&t and would not recommend anyone any sort of dealings with that company/provider at any point in time - avoid at&t at all costs - an iphone is not worth it.
    believe me.
apple is becoming more and more fascist as time goes on. i hope they choke on their own vomit and sink. for years i despised microfluffy and all things fluffy - now they don’t seem so bad after all…
