In a technical sense, you still have "unlimited" data. The difference is you have "full speed" unlimited data versus "throttled" unlimited data. Last time I checked, you signed up for an "unlimited" data plan. I'm an AT&T customer and yes I'm not happy about it considering I use anywhere between 2-5 GB a month, which will put me in the "may be throttled one month, fine another" category. If you don't like it, put your money where your mouth is and jump ship.

Seriously, where are you going to go if you want the latest and greatest Smartphone? Verizon with 2 GB for $30.00 per month? Sprint with their unusable-in-the-real-world, battery draining WiMAX network and pathetic EV-DO rev. A speeds? I see upwards of 5 Mbit/s on my AT&T 3G connection, and I'm quite happy with it.

In a perfect world, I'd love to get a low-end Android smartphone on a prepaid carrier and be done with it. The challenge we're all faced with is the fact the top-end subsidized Smartphones are only available on post-paid carriers. If you want the latest and greatest, deal with it.

Yes, it a way for AT&T can get extra revenue from the small amount of users who actually use alot of data. The fibre backbone cost have gone down which have been reported and profits go up by making the 5%ers the scape goats. It's going to get worse before the regulators catch on. by then it will be to late, thats what they want before they step in and remove another revenue stream from there greedy little hands.

Why does ATT mandate customers who use smart phones but do not have a contract to pay for a data plan when they dont want one?! This is my issue. I simply don't want to use data, just wifi, but ATT automatically adds the plan to may account! This is a big charade!

This doesn't pass the common sense test. If the number is so minute, it shouldn't be able to impact the network that much. After all, the AT&T network is huge and its resources are very significant. Correct?

OK, the numbers I gave were more correctly for 3G 5MHz cells, but the point I was trying to make is that avg bits/Hz have barely increased in LTE. Most of the apparent gains are from increased bandwidth, not efficiency improvements. There is very little magic here - most of the technology focuses on increasing peak rates, not capacity.

Moreover, the context of these numbers must be taken into account. Testing a newly deployed cell is one thing (the data you cite are from test results, not mobile users). Real world, full-to-capacity cells, with users on cell boundaries blasting out interference, is quite another. Still, I agree these numbers are impressive, but let's way to see how it truly plays out in the real, real-world.The truth is that spectrum will always be *limited* and so *unlimited* data is unfortunately fantasy, at least in the context of macro cells. What you'll end up with is a patchwork, in which you bounce in and out of macro-cells, femto-cells, wi-fi hotspots etc. Essentially, this is what the AT&T announcement is acknowledging, that the days of unlimited macro-cell data (which were only possible with few users and limited data thirst) are over.

TeliaSonera mobile users in Finland are already seeing average speeds of 36MBps, with peaks hitting 49MBps, and that's only after the first layer of LTE, with three more upgrades coming.

Dialog Axiata PLC of Sri Lanka has begun rolling out their LTE Advanced system and they have already hit 100MBps.

So much for "theoretical" and "pure fantasy", huh?
