Yes I got one of those emails it said I was one of the top 5% data users. And I was thinking to myself wow really I’m not on my phone as much as the people all a round me. It seems like most folks can’t put there phone down for more then ten seconds. I do play a real cheap card game a lot but I’m not streaming videos. Plus I just got this 4GS two months ago. Before that I had that 2G the first iPhone. Never got one of those text messages on that slow Polk and I played that same cheap card game on that phone for a couple of years. I think AT&T is try to find a way to upset the folks that are Grandfathered in on the unlimited data plans. And wouldn’t they be breaking some kind on law or laws by taking the top 5% of the data users only and putting there speeds down to the snail data service. I mean they sold us the phones that are able to handle these kind of data speeds and once they have are money for the phone

Actually I just received the message and called. I’m in the top 5% at 2.3 gb. And all because the iPhone 4s drops wifi constantly and I stream a lot.

I sincerely HOPE that there’s a lawyer out there who is planning to sue AT&T for tethering unlimited data users. I’m not interested in a $10 check. I’m interested in having my speed restored.

Just barely broke the 2gb barrier with 3 days left in my billing cycle and now ATT gives me 0.09Mps speeds… I don’t believe for a second that amount of data usage put’s me in the top 5% of users in the NYC area

If AT&T would give me a report of which apps are using the data, that would be helpful. They tell me I’m using too much, and I have no idea how that is. I want way more useful information coming from them.

Actually they are required to offer it to their pre-existing customers. If they want customer loyalty they should live up to their commitments. They deserve to face consequences for their slimy behavior.

My message had a phone # to call (866-344-7584). I called and the lady on the phone tried to convince me that I still had unlimited data – just the speed of the transmission would be reduced. I asked by how much. She said some people experienced just a “little” slower. Others experienced dial-up speeds.

I’m sorry, but I signed up because I was sold UNLIMITED data at 3G speeds. Talk about a bait and switch.

I got the message at about 2GB. Screw AT&T. I’ve been a loyal customer for years (ever since the 2nd generation iPhone) and have stayed with them because of the unlimited data. I travel a lot for work and use the phone the way it was meant to be used. And sometimes the wifi access in hotels and airports is way slower than 3g. Not cool.

It sucks! I hardly watch videos or you tubes. The reason i paid $400 for a new iphone again is because of the ATT unlimited data and for being a loyal customer. Now screw you ATT!!!!!! If i have to pay for limited data, might as well switch carrier!!!

Currently being done to me. Really sucks. Can no longer properly download videos from YouTube or news programs.
Makes my iPhone useless for anything other than photos and text. They will lose 5% of their customers right away, but my guess this is their intent. To lose the heaviest data users.

I hit the 15 GB mark last month and AT&T sent me that stupid message about being in the top 5% and said I should connect to a wifi, well, i didn’t. And this month I’m at 12GB and they sent me another text stating about the same thing and actually reduced my iPhone speed to 2GB! I’m so pissed off!! I pay for unlimited data and this is how they screw me. I called and complained and they said it states in their contract that I signed that they have the right to modify your data at any time. What bullshit.

As a network tech I can say false. No matter what ur plugging into ur phone u will not consume more than the network allows. It does not use more data faster ur upload and download speeds are still the same. Only difference is on a PC its a constant use of data weather u use it or not ur still sending and receiving. Att claims they have ways of knowing ur tethering yet their not the targets. Its the grandfather plans. Would they tell me I use too much data if I used 160gigs and pay alot on the tier plan no they wont. Yet its the same network strain cept the see more money.correct me if I’m wrong this was awhile back I believe i remember the unlimited was $19.99 and was. Changed to $29.99 when 3g was offered and didn’t they say that was a premium for 3g for those not grandfathered on the $20 unlimited. If so I’m paying a premium on a plan that was once $20 to use 3g but not getting 3g

Actually I got throttled after 1gig.can’t stream.GPS navigation does work.and after a test I’m basically hitting Max 139kbs download and 159kbs upload. Lowest I got was 38kbs. Use my data to talk to Skype with my soon to be wife who lives in Jersey while im at work in nyc. I live in NYC BTW so can’t always travel to jersey

i got the message just after hitting 2GB. At the time I still had over ten days remaining in my billing cycle. Unlimited data = $30, 4GB of Data on the tiered plan = $45. 4GB is the next plan offered over 2GB. AT&T is scum and I used to like them. Granted I receieved the text message about being in the 5% but I have not noticed reduced speeds. I have started streaming video all night while my phone charges just to screw them. I want to see if I can hit 10GB of data this month. I want to organize a day in which all AT&T iPhone subscribers with an unlimited data plan all just stream video and radio all day on their on iPhones while they’re working or sitting with the phone in their pocket or whatever. That’ll show AT&T when their servers crash!

At&t, Verizon, T-mobile, and others. All have started “throttling”. At&t and Verizon are using the same ambiguous 5%. Which is an obvious marketing ploy playing off the greater good mentality going around. If they are useing the same language they were givien the go ahead to do so. By there legal teams and feel that they can all get away with it. So its not likely to go away with a lawsuit. Complaning and protesting are useless.

They don’t want you to utilize the service that they marketed to you. That you pay for. That locked you in to that 2 year contract. That will cost you around $2500 during that 2 years. Most people also have free nights and weekends or unlimited talk. See where this is going. Push back. Show them you can utilize much more of there net work then you do.

In a billing cycle there are 28,000 night and weekend min. Use them all. If enough of us do they will all get the point. They need to know that the consumer still has power. They work for you.

Here is how you do it. Set up a free voip number (just search free voip) any one will work. Put your phone on it’s charger. Call that number at night. Your computer and your phone will talk for free all night to eachother. They can’t afford not to listen to there costumers. With there networks under that much strain.
