Now that the mini-notebook, netbook, UMPC or whatever else you want to call it market is booming, the Atom processor is in high demand. However, Intel is having trouble keeping up the supply.

Intel performed heavy promotion of the Atom processor and it seems to have worked too well. Funnily enough, the production hold up has nothing to do with Intel’s inability to get their hands on enough resources or produce the chips fast enough. Rather, a delay occurs once the chips enter the testing phase.

Intel has been reserving a lot of their testing resources for their Core processors which are more profitable. But a new facility for testing and assembly that will open next year should help Intel amp up their output. It should, at least, with 500,000 square feet!
