ATMs That Dispense Gold Coming to the US

If you need cash for some reason while you're out and about, going to an Automatic Teller Machine is one of the easiest ways to get your hands on some green, without having to worry about using your plastic card later. But, if you're not a fan of cash, and want something a bit more shiny, then you're in luck. A German-based company is bringing ATMs that dispense gold, and not cash, to the United States by the end of the year.

The machines look like traditional ATMs, but at the top you'll see the GOLD to Go sign, and that they'll be 2 meters tall. And instead of handing out cash, you'll be able to put cash (or your credit/debit card) into the machine, and get gold in return. The machine spits out 1 gram, 5 grams, 10 grams, or 1 ounce units at a time. The company plans on having 35 of the machines installed in the United States by the end of 2010, and hopes to have several hundred of them up and running by next year.

The ATMs will be connected to the Internet and check for updated gold prices every ten minutes, so that you get the latest prices each time you make a transaction. We can't say for certain, but we don't really see this being the best idea in the world.
