You mention the Nvidia chip set but do not say if that is fourth coming within the Asus Padfone…
Unlocked would be really great the the chances are on that slim or none. The carriers skim the fat and let customers worry about the excessive charges.
Phone and tablet combo or integrated in just a tablet is what I’ve been looking for.

I agree it’s all going to be nodes isn’t it, with each node adding extral for the applicable task at hand without creating a system dependency. Great for the consumer, great for our stress levels….great that for the first time in a generation we can write things and just forget about it knowing its safe. For people with bad memories like myself this is all providing that extra gene I was missing at birth!

Padphone + transformer = win

I thought there might be a problem with not being able to access the specific functionality of the phone…..but after thinking on how I use my phone – as long as I can dial, txt and be suitably alerted on the tablet screen I don’t see a problem. The trick is to get my head round the idea that my tablet would BE my phone.

But… I do think that the phone feature set here could be better utilized. The camera, webcam potentially, headphone jack, volume….all exist on the phone and it would be nice to see them integrated in some way on the node (either by physical placement or translation) thereby reducing cost, weight and just being DARN tootin clever.

Could two screens be utilized for example? (as with the Nook) with the ability to either synchronize them, or run each independently. Or could the phone touch screen be used as a track pad? with extra buttons helping to reduce the keyboard size further.

I consider the phone as the ideal base unit for all of my devices (supported admittedly by that ubiquitous infastructure in the cloud) and I think the transforming concept is the future for people like myself that want to save money and have a simple yet comprehensive system. I’m now fully impressed with ASUS’s logical approach to innovation and what warmed me recently is that they seem to have a good relationship with Google….and I’m thinking, wishfully perhaps, that there’s a nexus of the future in the making?

it is a MONITOR, SPEAKER, AND BATTERY ONLLYYYY!!!!! you could NOT use the tablet without putting the phone in the back of it SO AS TO use the phone’s 3g, CPU, MEMORY, and STORAGE

The direction is communication device & computer base unit (no more than 4×3 and thin) which will attach wireless or mechanical to a wide range of peripherals – pad/reader, keyboard, monitor, tv, printer, speakers, gaming, and so on – @ home, mobile, school, travel… Locations will also have available peripheral connections like cars, schools (students and teachers), hotels, airlines and of course the web will be a central sync location for personal, shared, and general information (web).
With one powerful base unit (solid state storage of course) there is little reason to have multiple computers – only a variety of interfaces. That is the direction – bet on it. The shift has begun…

In Europe this will/would be a smashing success. In the us, it won’t even make it here. Those subsidies we get cripple any universality. And because this concept would be highly unique, if it did make it over here to the us; you can bet one carrier will move to make it soley theirs. Excluding the possibility and killing it for everyone else.

Not to mention the fact if ATandTandT got this they would price the fk out of it and any accessories. Then chrage you twice over for a tethering fee.

All that aside, the geek in me hopes against hopes a carrier like sprint could maybe have a chance and shot at bringing this to america. It is one he’ll of a concept I would be into.

What the Padfone suggestion means is that iPad3 will have a built-in phone and both the smartphone and alternative tablet computers will be toast again. One does not need to carry both a pad and a phone and if the pad is a phone then the phone can be done without. The phone-capable iPad3 will have the capability to send its ring signal AND signal to a satellite handset, which will become the “shell,” and not in the Padfone sense of table shell but PHONE shell. One’s iPad3 will also become a Wi-Fi base station for home use and at last land lines will completely disappear!

I like the idea of the padphone. The power of these smartphones are on par with the best of tablets so why pay for the internals twice over? Will I buy one? Probably not. I own a tablet and it is great for what a tablet can do but I still find myself going back to my pc for using the keyboard (my tablet has usb ports that can actually use a keyboard and mouse but I still enjoy the PC above the tablet exp.)

I see no reason that there should be a special protocol involved. Most touch screens likely use USB as a input carrier already, for ease of deployment.

And hell, i wonder sometimes why the companies insist on redesigning every phone. Apple seems to do very well keeping with the same design for a duration, as do Lenovo with thinkpads (some looking the same as they did back when IBM made them).

i just wish Asus had gone all the way, and implemented a Transformer keyboard interface at the bottom of the tablet part. Modularity and re-usability is what made the PC great, after all.

Agreed. If I can pay $500 up front and $50 per month or less for data on both devices, I might be willing to consider this over a separate phone and tablet. But then, I’m still trying to find an excuse to carry around a tablet anyway since my phone already meets most of my needs. :)

The tethering fee will be half the challenge, I think, then the sticker price the other half. If both halves of the Padfone come to significantly less than a separate phone and tablet, then it’ll stand a chance; if it’s close to what you’d pay for a similar standalone phone and slate (which you could WiFi-tether) then it’ll likely fall flat.

Honestly I thought the PadFone concept was all gimmick until Asus reminded us that you should be able to pay a single monthly fee for 3G access for the phone and tablet Hopefully telecoms don’t ruin it by insisting on charging a $20 tethering fee… but if you can get unlimited, or even 5GB of data per month for a single fee, this combo concept makes a lot more sense to me than buying two separate devices and paying separate fees.

Of course, this also means you’re probably locking yourself into upgrading your phone and tablet at the same time when your 2-year contract is up, but do you really want to be carrying around a 3 year old phone or tablet anyway?
