I think what he’s saying is that calling it “a big hole and a loud noise” is a severe understatement. Of course, if it followed the Tunguska pattern, there would not even be a big whole, just a loud noise and an obnoxiously huge path of destruction roughly in the shape of a butterfly…

If you’re curious about what kind of damage that could have done, do a little reading on the Tunguska incident.

As for a response, regardless of what hollywood would have us believe, I gotta think that a handful of nukes would at least have a chance of changing it’s course (Through either direct or indirect explosive contact) or breaking it down into smaller sizes more capable of burning up in the atmosphere.

The asteroid watch is a giant JOKE.
Watch them as they whip toward us and there is not a fricking thing that can be done about it because as a race we _always_ wait for catastrophe to happen before we say “Oh yeah..Geez maybe we should have done something prior”.
We need a good sized strike to wake up our governments to look outward instead of inward..It is only a matter of time till one does hit I just hope it doesn’t take out a heavily populated area but if it does please let it be Beverly Hills.

Incorrect. The last extinction event aka Chicxulub was a result of a 6 mile wide asteroid. With the population density now the .5 mile wide asteroid would have been catestrophic.

Goes to show that NASA wouldn’t say anything anyway. They don’t want to bother with scaring the world about something that would pass anyway.
