The PS3 started off with terrible sales. Nintendo was bringing in tons of profit because it was so cheap. Even Microsoft lagged behind in sales because of a $400 price. But over the years Nintendo slipped because they weren't innovating and bringing anything new to the table. That is why the PS3 and XBOX360 are getting tons of sales right now, the prices are about half of when they started. The higher priced product doesn't necessarily mean the best. In fact as technology is getting greater, things are getting cheaper. That is why most of the industry is in console-gaming, people don't want to spend $500 more dollars to play on a PC. A PC may be the best way to game, but prices will always lack from it.

PS3 is fine for now. Sony should just continue profiting off of PS3 and start developing a prototype for Ultra HDTV to be sold alongside Ultra HDTVs to the public in 2016 to 2020. PS3 is already taking advantage of HDTVs and even 3DTVs. If people want a even better experience buy a PS3 and a 3DTV, that is my agenda after I buy a house first. No space for it right now. As far as Wii U is concerned they will have to really try to do a lot of convincing that its vastly superior to PS3 and Xbox360. Its way too early to make this determination yet and I must see a game comparison such as Call of Duty on Xbox360, PS3 and WiiU to make this judgement call. If I do not then I will wait until they do. In this tough economy, for a system to only have a HD Mario or Zelda is not a sufficient reason to buy.

You are wrong, there is a very large PC market to compete with, and the consoles are lagging behind, growing tensions for higher quality games. A lot of people are taking matters in there own hands and buying there next gen console's now (a PC). as of lately the PC has been glamorized and all the kiddies want one. Yes it is necessary if they don't want the PC market to get a larger foothold, and to keep multipaltform games consistent on all platforms while keeping the PC gamers happy.

If they wait any longer we will start to see handheld devices with comparable performance to the console's and will see multiplatform releases across all devices home consoles and cell phones. Sure this would be a dream come true for investors but not for me.

The PS4 could still use a cell processor, just a modernized one with an increased clock and increased core amount (4.5 GHZ per core with 3 PPEs and 12 SPUs). IBM has already shown processors like this on the PowerCELL server architecture. BlueRay is a given as all they have to do is increase the drive's speed. They could even get a new GPU from nvidia that is fermi based instead of the 73xx based graphics on the PS3. the XDR is a kick in the butt but DDR3 is cheaper, larger, and faster anyway, so I could see between 2 and 4 gigs of memory (shipping any new consumer device it's size with anything under a gig is absolutely pathetic and spending a dollar to save a dime. The controllers don't need anything special so they could use the exact same controllers.
TL:DR version: Sony spent all that money on R&D so they might as well use it. They packed in alot of functionality that to this day the competition still hasn't implemented. by leveraging upgrades to the tech in an iterative fashion, they could make a new console much cheaper then microsoft or Nintendo, who has to do much more R&D because they put it off till now.

as for game software, Costs go down when you use PC style development. This means licencing an engine, so that you can spend money on the presentation and such. For an example of how easy it is to make an awesome game using a premade engine and setpieces, look at the Mechwarrior mod for Crysis. All the new consoles of the upcoming generation are designed to have a much better SDK that doesn't require a dev to slog around with assembly directly. By using frameworks, dev time can significantly drop. Art time could drop as well if independent moddlers could work on games, as unimportant things like boxes and trees could be aquired from other sources.

You're failure to understand hardware architecture is astounding. RAM operating speed is inconsequential of the need for more space, one cannot compensate the other. The speed is also, though not cycle by cycle, bottlenecked by the processing speed making any RAM speed increment behind a threshold (far below 3.2Ghz) redundant.

It may also interest you to know that your 3.2Ghz figure is purely misinformation on the part of Sony. In actuality, it's dual channel RAM operating at 1600MHz. My current computer uses triple channel RAM operating at 2000MHz which by Sony's (bullshit) logic assumes a running speed of 6GHz.

On a final note, you're also confusing DDR with GDDR RAM. The PS3 uses 256mb of GDDR3 ram operating at 700MHz. I'm not going to differentiate between the two for you, you can google that yourself.

Please get your shit together before parading your alarming level of ignorance to the world.

About to splash out on a 3D tv , PS3 holding them back by not having 1.4 hdmi's . PS4 needs to keep Bluray . Sony please give the devs as much ram as they need this time . The slim as proved you only need two usb's . The user swappable HD was a winner . A new version of CELL is a must , software devs starting to get the most from it now . Would be a travesty to go with a different CPU next time . Graphics wise maybe a three quarter price point card . All this would keep the pr.development price down . Day one purchase if you stick to that lot Sony !!
