Pass on it! Owned it for a month before it started to have Force Closures on almost all programs that previously worked. The Music player gets stuck and you need to reboot to get it back. The memory stinks, the battery is good, but the smooth scrolling is really SLOW, and it just sucks for the money! A month and 1 day, I had to send it back in to get it fixed, it completely died! Even worse, I may NOT see it for another 2-3 weeks. If that is the case, it will be gone longer than I owned it! Pass on this product unless you getting it for your little child! If I get it back, I am going to give it to my 9 year old and I will buy a tablet with Android 3.0 on it!

The pricepoint on the recent Archos tablet lineup refresh (just in time for xmas/holiday season/early new year) is so tempting. A bit risky marketing strategy by the French company, but they gotta get the ROI ASAP. Their supply chain management and solutions could prove a huge problem, here in Oz, its slated for a late Dec/Jan release (possibly moved back another date, then moved back another, sigh) im itching to get the 70, I'm just trying to get these shoes back to my house so I can wear them.! XD

heck yeah power to the OLPC! they rock! move over apple! anyway to quote veekay, 2011 'will be the year of the tablet wars' (Veekay, 2010). LG puts in their cards with the OPTIMUS tab (rumour has it its powered by NVIDIA Tegra dual core chips last seen as prototypes at a trade show somewhere 2 years ago, reportedly with 4gb of RAM!) although i ain't holding my breath, seeing as the archos 70 is just around the corner, while the optimus might not even make it to mid year, possibly held back till the end or somehwere around 2012, the end of the world (NOOOO). The rest of the class, late comers like Acer also will have their say. there is a probability of 1:1 that like Samsung before them, they will be extremely overpriced, hopefully delivering the promise of power though.

The Samsung andd Apple offerings are made in China as well, the difference is the software engineering team behind those products.
@RobWard, Yes all compacitive touchscreens can use a stylus. The stylus has to be specifically designed work with the compacitive touchscreen. as the old "plastic-nose" stylus's (around for the last 15years) does not register inputs to the newer tech.

I had to take my smartphone out in the store and try out every stylus on the shelf (bestbuy), till I found one that worked great.

Another thing Veekay don't count out Dell and other big names. People trust them and will shell out a little more for a superior product. Flood the market? Between those big names you mentioned they have flooded the market with maybe a billion PC's. The realities of supply chains people are the ground are the real barrier to Chinese tablets. In addition it takes a lot of experience with advertising and fickle consumers to get it right. As an industrial engineer I have to say most Chinese consumer rip-offs don't understand the human factors of the product. Pick up a Samsung and an Apple and then a Chinese one and tell me you don't see a difference.

Veekay,

You are absolutely right about Archos. The bugs early on need to be ironed out quickly. Early German users have stated the device is just short of awesome. The problem is that Archos has left a bad taste with some inferior products in the past. As well as some great ones. They also need to ship these things on time. They have had a history of production problems as well.

As far as your SmartQ I am not so sure I agree. That screen is AWEFUL. What is that screen cathode ray? Looked real sluggish and the form factor is junk. The 35 dollar Indian computer is heavily subsidized and some peaople peg the real cost at over a 100.

But right on about Archos!

Archos 101 could be the best iPad competitor till date. All Archos needs to do is keep a very aggressive pricing on these tablets, make sure the software/hardware glitches are ironed out with quick patches, and do enough publicity and vendor tie-ups to make sure they shake the market.

Those who think that these Chinese tablet-pc "iPad clones" are no match for Apple's iPad, are in for a rude surprise. I have a SmartQ V7 (which triples boots Android, Linux and WinCE) and it is pretty decent for its price point. Android-based phones (like the Samsung Galaxy S and HTC Desire HD) are already making waves in the market, and even the underlying mobile/tablet-pc hardware too are improving phenomenally (with fancy names like Snapdragon, Cortex, Hummingbird, Atom, OMAP). The major SoC players such as Marvell and Qualcomm announced their 1.5GHz ARM processors (ARM Cortex A9 is around the corner), so these are pretty fast bad boyz.

The killer mobile-computing OS is quickly turning out to be Android, but the question is who will bell the Apple iPad cat? My bet are on Archos, SmartQ and eken (forget Dell, HP, Toshiba - they are too pricey, and don't really know how to flood the tablet-pc market). Heck, I like even the OLPC laptop, the Notion Adam (with e-Ink) and the special $35 Student Tablet PC (with powerful specs including solar powered battery!) from the Indian Government.

Wait and watch, 2011 is the year of the tablet wars.
