In a way they made it popular, but the iPad isn't a Tablet PC in the traditional sense.

Basically, it's like comparing a digital organizer like an old Sharp ZR5000 Zaurus with a UMPC like the Viliv N5, both may fit similar form factor but one is a far more basic device than the other.

A true Tablet PC can do pretty much anything a regular PC can, sans a keyboard, as it is a regular PC and just changes the primary UI to touch and/or digital pen. While the iPad is basically a extra large iPhone, being based on the same hardware and OS.

Doesn't change that the iPad is easy and fun to use but you won't ever be doing everything that you possibly can on say a MacBook Air, even if it was also configured as a tablet instead of a laptop.

So Apple just managed to make a popular tablet based device, which did in its way redefine the tablet game, but in the traditional sense it remains to be seen if anyone can make a popular full Tablet PC. Though the upcoming Windows 8 tablets may be the first to really make it.

In other news...

The Egyptians invented star travel, Da Vinci created the iPod, the Ancient Greek Hoplites drove the worlds first tank, Android designed the iPhone, and Xerox built OSX etc etc
