So what if they're using a different kind of memory?

It definitely ought to cost something closer to 35$ than 100$.

Personally I don't really consider myself an apple hater (maybe a little bit). I was an early iphone adopter, the last iphone I used was an iphone 4. I stopped using the iphone because like others, I got tired of the 3.5" screen, no SD card and so on. I like the hardware, but the specs are not the best. I don't like way they think, that's all. They probably did sell 37M iphones but how many android devices were sold in that quarter? For me, the iphone does not meet MY requirements, therefore, as a consumer, I decide is not the best product. Apple gets a lot of attention because they release one product for everyone to buy in one day and everyone who wants one is eager to get one that one day. Android sells millions of phones EVERY DAY, put them all together and that would create a lot of attention too. Consumers are choosing and little by little more and more are choosing androids, consumers want options not just one product, and I don't think is my opinion, I think it's a fact.

Its odd that people tend to forget that apple is not really a company made for techies. Its devices
are made to simple work well when started up for those who really don't want to mess with settings and upgrading and the like. You just get what you expect a decent middle of the road computer.
Microsoft has computers with great possibilities for those who can unlock them. They can easily outstrip a Mac dollar for dollar if you can build/ upgrade your own computer. Microsoft has great non-techie devices too. They have two different approaches to building a computer.
Both companies have downfalls but they both have benefits.

Sorry
my initial post was intended to rebut the comments concerning design innovation. So my example might have been confusing.

True,
the memory types are not interchangeable, but... The memory technology of the
two is not that tremendously different either. That said I’ll retire the memory
argument.

As
someone already pointed out the quotes are from an Apple employee so a bias is
expected. Apparently I may have been a
bit steamed as I felt the insinuation was that only Apple has competent designers.

Oh!
Apple you flatter yourselves too much! You haven’t made too many real
innovations here.

Now,
marketing! That’s what Apple excels at.
Apple has managed to convince a whole generation of consumers that their
products are somehow greatly superior to its competitors.

“If we
can’t make something that is better,” Ive says, “we won’t do it.”. Better for who? Apple or the consumer. Let’s look at the iPad. To go from a 16 GB iPad to a 32 GB iPad is
over $100 difference. $100 for 16GB –
seriously Apple?. I bought a 32GB memory
card for my LG phone, it cost less than $35 (the memory card not the phone). So 16GB of Apple memory cost $100 while 32GB
of memory in the open market is $35. Maybe
I should have bought the 16GB iPad and bought another 32GB memory card for $35
to stick in it. Oh wait that “cleanest
and most iconic consumer electronics” item doesn’t have a memory card port. Another marketing home run. Tell the consumer
it’s not less options - it’s a cleaner sleeker design that is so much cooler
without those ugly expansion ports.

One more
small point. MONEY! When you have a practically unlimited budget
to work with its not too hard to create some really cool stuff. When you have
very little to work with that’s when innovation happens. I won’t even open the topic on how big corporations
can and do use vast supplies of money to stifle the competition, make it disappear. Oh guess i just did.

I give apple credit and critique where they are due. Ive does have a point. It is no accident that company after company has release products in a number of categories that in many ways resemble apple designs from MP3 players to all-in-one computers, to smart phones and tablets. I'm not saying that Apple has better design than anyone else (I really don't think so), but they definitely are very good at designing products that are immediately recognizable as being distinctly apple. Whatever your feelings on that may be, the products themselves tend to be solid and relatively trouble free. That combination of distinct, handsome design, and solid quality and user experience really helps sell the company's products. I suspect that it is at least in part that association that some companies hope to capture when they design their products to resemble apple's.

That said some of apple's design decisions drive me bonkers.

“If we can’t make something that is better, “we won’t do it.”. There are better products than the iphone out there, there are better products than the ipad out there too. He doesn't decide what is better, consumers decide that and they are deciding all over the world. Stupid company with their stupid ideology. They said the iphone was at least five years ahead of any any other phone when it came out and it took about three for everyone to see better things than the iphone.

Or doing things other things better. Like having a full, battery enabled keyboard dock. Or giving more connectivity options for instances when the Cloud is not available, which is easy any time you go off grid. Or expandable memory, which also doubles by giving more connectivity options. All things Apple's competitors are doing.

I travel to client locales on a regular basis, and frequently am off grid. Getting files off a tablet or phone would be significantly more difficult at those times if it wasn't for some of the options Apple's competitors offer. Consequently iPad is an inferior solution in my job.

That's not to say it's an inferior product.....but that it's not suitable for all customers, due to some of the choices that they make.

Apple is not unique in innovating or adding "better" features. These competitors are just innovating on different things.

What Ives was apparently too polite to mention is that there is a third design method competitors use after "doing something different, or want(ing) to appear new", that is, slavishly copying Apple's designs.
