I have compete faith in Apple and in the devs that make apps for the app store. Such a big market, so much potential, so many customers; they will square away any fragmentation.

Except the 8″ may have more up to date features. So could fit in at the same price range as an alternative to the iPad 2. While 1024×768 on the smaller screen size also means higher pixel density, not as good as a retina display but still better than the present iPad, and that could make it a little more preferable for things like ebook reading.

Because it increases the number of support configurations that the iOS and apps have to support and be optimized for… But until all apps are thus optimized then there will exist fragmentation of support for the full range of devices.

Though this pales in comparison to the issues with Android because Android has to deal with a far larger range of supported devices. So mainly just an annoyance until the app market has time to adapt. Not counting any apps that don’t get updated because the developers stopped supporting it of course.

Whether Apple decides to offer different size models remains to be seen but it’s clear from the rest of the market that people are going more and more for a compromise between the portable sizes (devices that are easily carried but not necessarily easy to use while on the go) and the mobile sizes (devices that can be used on the go).

Right now Apple has two devices squarely placed in each category but may want to tap into the growing market for those who need a compromise solution.

A 8″ device though isn’t that much smaller than the existing 9.7″ iPad, and the app support inconvenience should be less than when the iPad first cam out and they had to add support for the larger screen for the up till then iPhone only apps.

There have been all sorts of rumors that never come true; last year for the iPad 2 everyone was saying there would be a retina display. Once the iPad 3 comes out at the usual $500(it won’t be more) it’ll push the iPad 1 to be under $300 and the iPad 2 to be under $400. There’s no room for it pricing-wise really. People will end up having to choose between an iPad 2 10″ or an iPad 3 mini 8″ at that price range.

8″ doesnt make sense. Apple will start selling the iPad 2 for $400. An iPad 8″ will be bellow the $300 mark. They would have to get rid of the iPod touch line. Besides Apple wouldn’t fragment their platform unless they really need to. The iPhone’s screen proportions hasnt changed in 5 iterations. It would be the stupidest decision ever. Considering that iPads keep selling like pancakes, i dont see this happening.

Even when the resolution is the same on an 8″ iPad the screen real state is not. Our fingers wont change size depending on resolution so Apps that were designed for a 10″ screen might be annoying to use on an 8″ screen if certain elements are too small.
