Apple Watch battery life information detailed

The big announcement from Apple this month has been the Apple Watch. We have been expecting Apple to step into the smartwatch market for a long time and the product finally went official. If you missed all the details on the watch, you will want to check out our Apple Watch hands-on. One of the things that many wondered about during the previous coverage was the battery.

Specifications for the battery weren't really covered in great detail, but thankfully, Apple has now offered up lots of information on the battery inside the sleek watch. Apple says that you will be able to wear the watch all day without worrying about the battery. The goal for battery life was 18 hours after an overnight charge.

That battery life figure assumes the wearer will be using the watch for checking the time, receiving notifications, using apps, and performing a 30-minute workout. What that really means is if you use the watch more than Apple expects, you won't see the 18-hour lifespan. However, Apple was able to hit that 18-hour number using a pre-production Apple Watch paired with an iPhone running pre-production software.

Specifically in testing Apple performed 90 time checks, 90 notifications, 45 minutes of app use, and a 30-minute workout with music playback from the Apple Watch via Bluetooth during the 18 hour runtime.

You can talk for up to three hours per charge; the battery will handle up to 6.5 hours of constant music playback per charge, or up to 7 hours of working out per charge. If all you do is check time, the watch is good for 48 hours with five time checks per hour. Just sitting around the watch can stay powered for 72 hours. You will need 1.5 hours for an 80% charge and 2.5 hours for 100% charge.
