I believe Valve is drooling to take the approach of OnLive; remove the need for better hardware when the grunt of the rendering power can be accomplished on the the game server side. OnLive runs on almost every platform or OS with a HTML5 capable browser (including Unix distros). The problem is that right now OnLive cannot be bought (something that is against Apple's very fiber). Valve has the user base to be very appealing to Apple (who happens to have very swollen pockets). Apple would love to give Valve big money to bring some exclusive content to iOS + OSX, and Valve would need some serious server upgrades to adopt (ah ahem ... steal) the OnLive technology.

Makes me wonder?

On the other hand, Valve is doing very well on their own, Apple is the company that want's to become a force in the gaming market.

Here's to guessing :)

This article is purely speculation, maybe Apple is begging Valve to port their games to mac but lets face it. Who really play games on Mac? You cant even change your own graphic card

All Apple cares about is the iOS user. Because there is where the $$$ is. Lock them in, where essentially the ONLY things they can buy is through them and where they are upgrading their devices on a regular basis.

The iOS ecosystem is where the big bucks are. (For Apple)

Apple WANTS to kill off all their devices and essentially only have the iPod touch, iPhone, iPad, MacBook Air and "iMac Air" left (well that dosen't exist, yet). Why? 1) 2, at most 3, year replacement cycles and if "Joe" wants more storage, more memory, he has to buy a new device not not buy a $25 to $100 part to increase storage or memory. He will have to spend $1500 (whatever it may be) for a new device.

This is what Apple is pushing in their Mac lineup of computers.

There ALWAYS will be a need for servers (especially for cloud-based operations), workstations, etc... But, there isn't were the $$$ is. (Meaning no massive markups or profit margins) Also, you can't screw these people like how you can screw iOS (consumer) users. You screw with them, they leave. You screw iOS (consumer) user, they keep coming back.

Massive profit margins is what will get Apple in trouble. 1) Professional users (business users, enterprise, whomever it may be) WON'T pay for the name. If they can get something similar (or the exact same) cheaper elsewhere, they will get it elsewhere. 2) What happens if people wake up and aren't willing to pay for your "name"? You will suddenly be between a hard place and a rock.

If Apple dosen't cater SPECIFICALLY to the "professional" user, besides the regular consumer, they will be, literally sand. No solid base, Consumers? They come and go. "professional" users? They tend to stay. Another "hot" product comes along? Consumers WILL be dumping Apple, no question. Have no professionals? Suddenly you are standing empty handed. Professionals will stand there. "hotness" of products dosen't matter to them. Getting the job done, and the best possible, is what matters.

You CANNOT cater the same "thing" to a professional user as you would a consumer user at the end of the day. You will HAVE to cater specifically to them. And the consumer as well, if you want to have them both.

You can have a ferrari, but if you don't have the infrastructure to drive it on, It's USELESS. And that's why catering to the "professional" user is critical. THEY are the ones paving your roads, so you can drive your ferrari down them. Don't have them? Well, try to drive a Ferrari down a muddy road. You won't get far.

If Apple based it's future on your simple mind, we could rename the company Microsoft 2. The future isn't individual servers, or even company server farms. Creating storage opportunities that reduce the overhead, improves security and access is the future. Apple created a product that pushed an objective along. Once that objective was reached, they dumped the product instead of pouring money into a dying technology. If you are paying attention, you will see that more and more is being moved off of individual devices and becoming a service.

At the end of the day, Apple will be there with solutions that get work done, not create more work.

His visit has nothing to to do with OS X, the product is in it's last phases. The future for gaming involves toys like the iPad and yet to be announced home entertainment products. The Mac is a tool, but not the center of the Apple universe. Even Microsoft is moving in this direction. Gaming consoles, like computers were last century technology. Apple is working on things to wrap technology around us like a warm blanket, not recreate the Erector Set. Game designers see the future of gaming and Apple sees the future of delivering the experience. Tim is probably not even thinking about the current products, he knows what exists in the Level V of Eureka in California.

I don't think anyone would be happy with what they have if they knew what Tim has already played with. That's why I like Apple. They see the future, not the next model year.

Killing the xServe?

"Prosumer" version of Final Cut pro?

"killing" the Mac Pro? (well not officially yet)

Apple is getting out of the professional world, and becoming more consumer. (so "prosumer")

How large is that group of designer, audi, film people compared to the rest of the Mac users/purchases? Probably not that big.

Apple WILL push them towards Thunderbolt "accessorized" Apple devices. If they don't want that, well, they will go to the PC world. And with HP working closely with Adobe and Avid to make these the best creative machines out there. Don't be surprised if these "professionals" begin to jump over to these HP desktop (and mobile) workstations.

“killing” the Mac Pro? (well not officially yet)

Apple is getting out of the professional world, and becoming more consumer. (so “prosumer”)

How large is that group of designer, audi, film people compared to the rest of the Mac users/purchases? Probably not that big.

Apple WILL push them towards Thunderbolt “accessorized” Apple devices. If they don’t want that, well, they will go to the PC world. And with HP working closely with Adobe and Avid to make these the best creative machines out there. Don’t be surprised if these “professionals” begin to jump over to these HP desktop (and mobile) workstations.

Frame rates being lower on Macs has more to do with coding being optimized for Windows (Direct X) than there being any issue with the Mac hardware which is, by and large, now the same as comparable PC hardware. This is clearly proven by Macs running Windows natively in Boot Camp and not having the frame rate or performance issues. Apple system sales are up more than double of 2009 and have been at a steady upward climb, Apple could be looking to continue that by going at different users (i.e. gamers).
The optimization issue is avoided completely by Valve since they have brought the Source engine natively to the MacOS. Most other MacOS games are ported which results in loss of those optimizations. I would not be surprised if there is some deal here doubling down on that relationship. With Apple fronting funding to further the MacOS Source work. However, with Tim Cook showing up at Valve, that signals something bigger, we shall see.

The one person I know as somewhat a friend who has an iMac...expensive as shit, all-in-one, with pirated Windows 7 ....just to play games...it can play Skyrim maxed out...for an hour before it over heats and the thing auto shuts down to protect the graphics card from shitting its self. If I wanted another operating system on my computer, I'd go for Ubuntu or one of the many other Unix-based operating systems that are free and don't require you to install it on a expensive piece of crap.

My current three and a half year old computer can run skyrim nearly maxed out for just under $900, with another $100 to upgrade to a graphics card that is not brand new, and could be a beast for another $300 for new motherboard, processor and RAM and still come in at least $1000 cheaper....

Valve can work with Apple for a "gaming push", it still won't change the fact that a majority of Steam's catalogue is made by developers who don't care to re-release their games for Apple products and Valve games and games of small indie developers are the only products likely to be coded/re-coded so they can run on Macs...

I wonder if these people even BOTHER to think before writing these articles.

Apple pleases the massives, not a select few. Apple is more and more making their devices to PLEASE the iOS user more than the long term Apple user. Because there is SIMPLY more money there.

People needing "Heavy duty" products is lowering. For most people out there, a MBA is a perfect device. A $2000 MBP? No.

Apple will NOT make a Gaming machine because that is NOT the audience who they are targeting. Yes, it needs to do "light" games for people, but most aren't going to play a Skyrim quality game on a Mac.

"Retina" display MBP? First off, you know how freaking expensive those display will be? Second, do you know how much battery life those will suck? And then the hardware to be capable of pushing it?

AND! AND! in something that slim? Your computer WILL melt because of how much heat is produced in something that slim.

Apple will KILL the 13 and 15 inch MBP's and replace them with a 13 and 15 inch MBA. Because those will be plenty powerful for the TYPICAL Apple user.

17 inch MBP? Don't be expected if that is completely killed and no replacement. your TYPICAL Apple user isn't going to spend $2500+ for a 17 inch powerhouse.

The point being, the Typical Apple user dosen't need a powerhouse machine. But those who do? Apple will PUSH them towards Thunderbolt. And those who need a powerhouse device? Will either have to get what Apple gives them or they will pick up what's in the PC world.

WOW.

Apple nuts really don't understand VALVE at all.

OMG A GAMING CONSOLE.??? for real?? Anyone who's anyone, knows VALVE don't make consoles..... nor do they make games not available in Steam.

Apple recently got on board the VALVE wagon so that Steam could support OSX games. All those blogs sites keep up on bad rumors, but they sure as heck don't keep up on real facts. As Apple and Valve have been working together for quite awhile now.

Retina displays, gaming, macs. These three things do not go well together. If you have ever gamed on mac OS (not counting minecraft, because it's a .jar file), you can see framerates are far lower than when it is running windows. And when you have low framerates to begin with, increasing the resolution like this is NOT a good idea. You'll end up with worse looking games. Pixellation isn't a problem because of this thing called anti-aliasing, which smooths out jagged lines, so assuming you aren't 6 inches from the screen all of the time, you won't see pixels. Most notably however, because a good amount of computer games (indie games aside) are made for xbox and pc specifically, few coders are willing to convert their games to run on macs, and when they do so, it is almost always significantly after the fact. So ultimately, this move will mean running games on lower settings on macs (not avoid the uglyness of lower than native resolution) and the games that will be run will be either well coded beautiful valve games, or 2-3 year old games that are already out of the public eye. If you have wanted to game on macs, there has always been a simple solution, install windows. If apple really wants to attract gamers to its new computers, I would suggest the company simply offer windows as an alternative to macOS.
