I can now confirm that you CAN update your older nanos. Did it myself. Just connect your nano to iTunes, click for a software update, and voila, you got yourself a new Nano. Haven't used it to see if I like the new navigation better, but there you go!

ill be bloomin fumin as i feel like my nano is still brand new and its had barely an update yet, not seen any mention of custom walpaers on the new one/software which i think is a bit lame and would have been easy to impliment, but yeah apart from the built in nike plus which im not intrested in, its the same hardware so better be getting an update!!

I have a 6th gen Nano and i'm gonna be quite upset if they release this new nano with nothing but an updated UI and don't provide it as an update for preexisting 6G Nano owners. But I believe they won't release an update and people will be required to buy the new nano to get the software, although the hardware is completely identical.
