I called up AT&T and asked them to unlock my phone. The rep connected me to someone who i belive was an Apple person . She asked me for the IMEI number and sent me an email of instructions.I just had to backup and restore the iPhone and it was working my local GSM carrier.

I called up AT&T and they sent me an email with instructions to unlock the phone. It was basically backup and restore your phone with iTunes. I did that yesterday. I tried TMobile later that day, but it said ‘No service’. Im planning to call AT&T, or just drop by ATT or Apple store this week and get it done with. Cant say ‘Finally’ yet!

I was a little early, but AT&T partnership operations asked for imei # and phone #, then sent an email a few days later saying the phone was unlocked and to complete the unlock by tethering to iTunes. I ended up having to restore the device to get it working.
