but, yes it could go a lot further. we all have our list of things we’d like to see enabled/added to it.

if it weren’t for your Slashgear put-down attitude, you would just point out that 2012 is the year Apple needs to take the next big step with Apple TV, whatever it is, since the rest of industry is trying out their various ideas too. i’d agree with that, and i expect Apple will.

No, wrong. the OEM’s very clearly do NOT want to depend on Google, which is why they are all building in their own parallel HDTV “smart” non-Google OS’s, apps, stores, and services. they may run on some Android “fork” too, but your account is with the OEM, not Google. they all want their own “walled gardens”too, just like Apple’s.

Apple knows that. The key to success is get the content providers to come on board with a paradigm shift in how they distribute their content. That paradigm shift involves allowing people to shift from the present model that ties them to a TV schedule to an on-demand model that allows people to not only pick and choose what they want to watch but also when they want to watch it. If Apple can convince the media companies to allow them to provide a subscription service for their content then that will finally begin that paradigm shift in how we consume media.

Selling 4 million AppleTVs is certainly not an embarrassment at all.  It certainly is far more successful than GoogleTV.

Other than the X-Box, no one has solved the problem of how to get people to buy in mass quantities another box for the living room. NO ONE.

I told Steve Jobs that the solution is to create an Apple TV Gaming Console. Hopefully Apple has listened.

Steve Jobs is one that knows the importance of the input device: mouse to make computers personal, touch to make phones smart, and there now needs to be a new paradigm to support/manage/control the variety of contents. But it’s not going to be touch, voice, or motion as the main input device. Touch, voice, and motion act as supporting the ecosystem, not replacing main functionalities. So until Apple figures this out, TV will only become a hobby.
