I agree. When you consider that the best Andriod offerings to date are less than polished honeycomb based tablets and they still made decent gains. Now with a much improved OS in ICS i can’t see how Andriods market share gain can do anything but speed up.

They said the same thing about android phones 18 months ago, now how’s that working out? I think they will catch up a lot sooner than we believe.

Windows 8 will be interesting. It will bring a tablet UI, but a full blown OS with all the hardware support mostly in place. If Microsoft markets correctly, they could end up gaining large amounts of market share.

I can see this being truth. For awhile the iPad was ahead of the game. So many android tablets out there are complete junk. I mean, a $90 tablet from Walgreens? Really? I use that as an example that places that have no business in selling tablets, have an android tablet on their shelf. But android tablets are really coming a long way. The Asus Transformer is a beautiful tablet and Samsung is putting out some nice tablets. iPad has a huge lead, but android powered tablets are stepping it up and showing their worth.

It may never happen (Android tablets catching up). The guess I’m pulling from my butt is, we might see a 45/35/30 split by Q2 of 2013 iOS/Android/Win8. Windows tablet has a better shot of overtaking iOS (or just absolutely die, with no in between) in a few years.

My prediction is that a reliable (8″ – 9″) tablet (that has a decent OS) that is priced under $300.00 will win the tablet war. I love the iPad, but it’s too expensive to put in the hands of each student. Most schools will find that BYOT / BYOD will be the only way they can afford 1:1 mobile learning.

Apple has so much of a lead in tablets that it’ll take Android either a long time of selling somewhat more, or a period where they’re blowing the doors of iPad sales, before they’ll ever catch up in total units in use. And I say that as an ASUS Transformer owner, who likes it much better than my friends’ iPad 2′s. Apple’s lead at this point is pretty commanding.

Desperate Analysis, unless other manufacturers can figure out a way to loose money on every device they sale IE the Kindle and stay in business the analysis is bogus.
