Wow, Raygun.... those are some bold statements that you haven't backed with any actual data. congratulations!

The point is to bring it all the technology into one seamless easy to understand UI. whether you are away on your phone, at home at the computer/tablet or sitting in front of the TV, all of your data, media and search capabilities should be available to you across all your "SMART" devices.

The Apple TV may be a rumor for now BUT it is an obvious step forward and MOST consumers would benefit from one "smart" tv as opposed to the myriad of devices they have to purchase now to accomplish what one "smart" TV could. If you are the average person then you only used your PC/tablets and blu-ray to access web apps and the internet. These people could save a lot of money by purchasing a "smart" TV.

Besides......... Where were you when Google TV came out?

Apple will probably just do it right the first time so it makes sense to buy.

sounds to me like you just don't like Apple.

BTW. I have PC's linux boxes Mac's and androids. Mac makes a great product, that is a fact.

You are absolutely right, as far as the main stream consumer, but that's not to say that the same is not true of all products. When I upgraded from an extremely basic mobile phone, to an Android, I didn't do so because I needed all the functionality, or because it was practical, I did it because it was cool, fun, and exciting. All products are like this, and believe me, Apple know it. Apple is a fortune 500 company, and if each branch were to separate and become it's own company, each branch would be a fortune 500 company! They didn't get this successul by forgetting that "people buy stuff because it's cool." Let's also not forget that Apple products are sold all over the world, so your narrow view of the cool showy American being the only market for Apple products is, well, a bit narrow.

That being said, many people all over the world have become increasingly frugal. If a product is cool, but does not provide a viable use, it will not be purchased. When I bought my Xbox 360, I did not buy it just because it was cool, I bought it because it was a cool, simple way to be entertained. Games, movies, Streaming content, and more. The Same is true with any product, and you can bet people aren't shelling out $600 for an iPad just because it's cool. Of course that's a factor, a big one, but alone, it is not enough to be purchasable.

The problem you seem to have with Apple is that you haven't been paying attention. The computer is shifting. Soon your computer as you know it will be in the cloud. Your phone, your laptop, your desktop will all be ways of adding content, and viewing content from that cloud. The TV that Apple created will not be any different, it will be a TV, good one, with access to streaming content, and direct access to Your computer.

On a final note, I'm not saying this is the correct way to go, or that Apple is superior. I personally build HTPC's and sell them to people I meet (one day I should start a site) and use a mac, and an iPhone. I sell Cricket phones and also use an Android based phone. I purchase Apple products because they are cool, and because they have brought me functionality that I couldn't get before. Yes, you are correct that a large base of customers for Apple, are the "I am now cool" buyers. You are wrong, however, to assume that Apple has overlooked this, or that they are the only company with this market

You're exactly right, it will not be competitive. Apple never has been. Is the iPad technically competitive with other tablets? Or the macbook? No, never has been, never will be. And guess what, consumers don't care. If it provides a viable solution, is simple, elegant, and works, then it will be purchased. And since those concepts seem to be what Apple is going for, I wold assume the TV will fit the bill

Thank you for proving my point. You are the exact target demographic of apple marketing. Sadly, you will most likely never understand why. But, I can try to sum it up in one sentence.

I took the red pill and you chose the blue one.

Sorry, but this analysis is weak. Most Apple users buy Apple because the product is awesome, they work, and they work seamlessly together, which is why Apple TV could work, it will integrate with the Apple suite of products you already own. And even if there is merit to your conspicuous consumption argument, which I think is way overstated, the idea that people don't show off products in their home is ludicrous. They do. Whether this can be produced economically, there I am way over my head, but if Apple produces a relatively affordable TV, count me in!

Not gonna happen. Jobs missed a variable when calculating his formula. Because of Apples marketing, a large portion of the customers buy apple products because of the "I am now cool" factor. Thing is, these people will only buy apple products that people can see them use. Laptops, iphones, ipods, and ipads. Most of them do not own an apple TV nor a mac.

Apple (again not for everyone but for a large portion of the customer base) is to a lot of people the same as financing a fancy sports car or SUV when they live in a shanty. Or for people who do buy an amazing home but never afford to decorate the interior.

A solid portion of the people in the USA and other first world countries care more for show then go.

That being said, this is the bread and butter of apple consumers, these same people will not buy an over priced apple TV simply because the chance of their friends coming over to see their amazing apple TV in their shanty is not going to happen. They cant risk the chance that someone will see them for what they are. Not trying to be mean or negative, but superficial in their mindset.

Apple can not make the TV competitive in price because Apples business model requires about a 40% margin on their products. TV's run in the 10% to 20% margin category, not much money to be had in them. Apple would have to engineer their own panels to make anything "better" then what is already offered. Apples does not have the scaling technology to offer a better picture on anything greater then the native resolution of the panel.

I could go on...but their are more hurdles to jump over then Jobs forsaw.

Can I ask a practical question at this point? How would Siri tell the difference between what the viewer says and what the person inside the television says? Especially with a good audio system?

"It's time once again for Baseball Tonight's 'Around the Horn'..." (Siri thinks it's a command and turns the channel to porn).
