No, actually, the chip in the cable is to stop cheap clones being manufactured – it has very little to do with the data transfer functionality.
I suppose that would make it a rip-off.

I think Apple woulda made more people happy if they sold a 6 foot cord.

But my hat is off to Apple for the whole Lightning design. It is slick and works great. It makes micro-USB seem so antiquated now. It’s hard to explain, but it goes in/out so easily, and yet has just the right amount of tension. Unlike min-USB where countless devices have been ruined because you pull the female power jack out with the cord. Plus, it’s so nice to be able to stick the power cord into your phone on the nightstand at night without worrying if the right part of the cord is up. Another reason why people just fall in love with Apple.

Micro-USB sucks. As they say in the business world “Who was the idiot who came up with that idea?”

After using Lightning for a few months, I now despise all my other micro-USB devices. Micro-USB SUCKS.

Lightning cables are expensive by design, you need a chip and circuitry in each end because they decided to put it in the disposable cable instead of putting it in the non-disposable computer, phone, tablet, etc.

So it’s not really that this particular cable is a rip-off, it’s that the design itself is consumer-unfriendly.
