The only reason for parallel-booting Windows instead of using virtualization is 3D support. Virtualization is fast enough for everything else and well supported. The reason for using Intel is because its CPUs are cheaper and faster. The reason for using ARM is power consumption. Or why do you think nvidia used ARM in the Tegra SoC? ARM has a significant market share in embedded devices, Intel cant compete there. The x86 arch cant compete there. They will need to do some significant internal redesign or (finally!) ditch x86. And thats indeed a problem for Intel because those highend embedded devices are becoming a new mass market. Forget about the eeePC trash.

Good comments. On target.

"What wa Steve thinking?"... MONEY, money money,
He still thinks everyone is a sucker. He's trying to sell the razor and the blades too.

Apple never used intel inthe begining, until he gave up becasue everyone wanted to run windows programs. Since the iPad (UGG!) is just an iPhone without phone and since the tablet doesn't do anything, he doesn't need the Intel chips and saves some money. so "wake-up call for Intel" Ha, ha, not even 1% of the global market?... like a mouse scaring an elephant.

I’ve used Macs for over 20 years, but I think Apple missed the target big time with this. In addition to the unfortunate name, I see the following:

First, they apparently want you to purchase all content from Apple. They don’t mention that you can download free content. No thanks, no way. Then, no flash capability, no USB port, no multi-tasking, no user-replaceable battery, and a really ugly bezel. What was Steve thinking?

What does it do that a normal tablet PC won't do? Even one several years old and available for far less? Or a used netbook, for that matter. Show wide-screen movies? Not very well with the 4:3 screen dimensions they use.

My ten y/o Walkabout HH3 tablet pc holds my 800+ free ebooks, shows my videos, pictures, has GPS, wifi, and cost a lot less. Did I mention it's waterproof rugged, and almost indestructible?

I see that there are only two things of positive note with the iPad. That it uses an Apple-designed chip, and an SSD drive. Both went almost unnoticed in the hype. The SSD drive will soon be the industry standard and Apple doing their own processors should be a wake-up call for Intel.

Other than those two items, I see a big worm in the Apple.

Michael,

Since you've actually tested the iPad I was curious if you could comment at all on it's web capabilities?

I've heard people say things like "there's no good way to hold this thing and type on it?"

Jobs claims that surfing the web on this thing "is a dream" but perhaps he doesn't type in more than a URL here or there. I wouldn't be surprised if he has a secretary for posting comments on web blogs. (Too bad he couldn't put a microphone into the iPad and enable some speech-to-text).

I've seen a number of apps out there for creating queries out of speech and even Google searching for products based on photos you've taken with the Nexus. Sadly revolutionary technologies like these seemed to be too pie-in-the-sky for Apple.

"and, as a backlit display, it’s perfect for reading in dark places"
Why do you hate your eyes? I mean really, you must be truly stupid to think that statement is in any way accurate. Backlights are absolutely terrible for your eyes. If you want to read in a dark space, you need a light shining ON what you're reading, NOT DIRECTLY INTO YOUR EYES. Do you want to make your veins burst?

.
You got it! That's the great marketing strategy to get suckers to pay for the same device 3 and 4 times.

Suckers paid for the iPhone when was sold without GPS (while other companies already had it) then they paid again for the iPhone 3G without cut and Paste and they paid again for the SAME phone because they added and "S" but still no multitasking.

With the iPad, the same suckers will pay again for the same iPhone but huge and without a phone. And they will pay again when they put the camera, and again for the 3G, and again when they put a USB or a wired connection and again and again....

The malicious thing is that the technology already exist but Apple doesn't include it while the other companies, they add it when the technology becomes available.

I think the iPad is a test by Apple. They wanted to see how limited they could make a device and still have it be hailed as "revolutionary" and "market redefining" by the blogosphere.

I mean lets face it... No matter WHAT Apple had announced, the tech press would have found a reason to declare it a fundamental and historic milestone in the history of technology.

Years ago when Microsoft released slate tablets, the world laughed, claimed they were a problem without a solution, and declared them useless and pointless. This despite the fact that Zinio was actually quite a nice first foray into the exact same crap Apple is promising - multimedia periodicals.

Fast forward about 5 years and Apple releases a 10" slate and a book extension to iTunes and the very same folks who snidely laughed at the Windows slates now genuflect and come up with rationalizations how this is "different".

Such is the power of marketing, hype and branding.

You must be my twin. I've argued the exact same thing to no avail with many an apple fan-boy. I love macs and have programmed on them long enough to know both carbon and cocoa, but I know a crap product when I see it. I too am awaiting the Adam eagerly, though what I truly desire is a 13.3" screen (such could display A4 sized pdf's at a near 1:1 ratio minus a bit of the left/right margins). It'll probably be a while though until such a device can be cheaply made with a pixel qi or mirasol touchscreen display (which is unfortunate)

Btw, I also suffer from LCD blindness. For whatever reason I can never seem to find dumb spelling/grammatical errors until I print something off.

Not even close to a jack of all trades.
My Windows 7 Tablet PC Convertible does much much more. I can lay back on the couch, touch the screen... flick through web pages, watch Flash... install any number of eBook readers including Kindle. I can do video chats, I can log into websites with the fingerprint scanner on the side without having to type passwords. I can carry it in one hand and easily input data using handwriting recognition, or I can set it down and use the large on-screen keyboard with my fingers, or I can flip the keyboard around and use it like a laptop. I can plug it into a TV, slide out the infrared remote control and watch recorded TV over a homegroup networked to my Media Center. Heck, I can even stream music and videos over the internet straight from my home Media Center. Does the iPad even have network file sharing capabilities? Can it print? I can also plug a camera into my Tablet, control its exposure settings, and take pictures that are instantly loaded on my Tablet PC's screen in RAW format which I can then edit in Photoshop/Bridge/Lightroom/etc with pressure-sensitive Wacom stylus accuracy. Of course, my Tablet PC was $950... so a little more than the $830 iPad, but still a far more capable tool.

So you just have to carry your iPhone in your shirt pocket so you can make calls no need to surf any more.

Your Macbook (to do real work) in your back pack.

And if you find a wifi spot, your iPad under your arm will give you a quick surf (it's ok with no Flash) If you want to read a newspaper don't forget you cannot roll it and put it in your back pocket.

And please don't worry about syncing them together because you can't find the USB port.

Well a little bit clumsy, but that's OK you will look cool and snub.

To me, the iPad is the jack of (almost) all trades. Most of us are already carrying around way too many devices. The last thing I want to lug around a single function-colorless ereader. Money is tight and space is limited so iPad is best bang for the buck!

I got a question, that i'm curious about. Has apple made it clear which apps run on the iPad and which ones don't? For instance, if you run one that doesnt, does it display an error message or does it load it?

> The screen is amazing with a full XGA resolution. I could easily imagine
> reading for hours on end on this screen and far prefer this idea to e-ink.

It appears you do not have to read a lot, especially not complex texts or whole books. 130dpi makes a good screen but it is not good enough for longer reading sessions. 130dpi is going to kill you if you want to display A4 size pdf on 10 inch. Even on the Kindle with 150dpi it could be better. Backlight is nice when there's no ambient light, but for some reason it also stresses your eyes much more and makes it difficult to concentrate. Just try spell-correction on a computer, then print it out and check again.

To summarize: Not using PixelQi or Qualcoms technology, no usb, currently no wireless, no memory extension...this is something I can't imagine any informed person to buy right now. Except maybe...there are quite a few people who seemingly bought the iPhone and iPod touch as status symbol, showing off their silly games in restaurants etc. Anyways, I'm quite happy about this since it gives NotionInk the chance to score big time with their Adam. Which, btw, has an open extendible OS, wireless, usb and will likely be an great experience for reading books outside. The geeks can finally come back into sunlight :-)

on the pixel doubling thing, thats mostly a non-issue for games as they are 3D based anyways; and so can just scale up the models to fit (and the GPU part can handle that with no issue).

and for other apps, the GPU can again be used for the lifting; this as its not being used to render something heavy like 3D game graphics.
