This is a good move by Microsoft. My take on the whole B&N Nook buy is that Microsoft is doing with B&N what they did with Facebook. A 17.5% investment in just the Nook (B&N owns 82.5%) isn't a big of a deal. But it is big enough to knock off the Android eco system to get a strong foot hold in the ebook market. Now we will have 3 distinct players. Apple with its iPad book deals, Amazon with its Android based kindle fire and Microsoft/B&N with the Nook/Win8 ebook reader. It is similar to the deal Microsoft did with Nokia and the Nokia Lumia 900 has already created enough buzz and is on the path to successful sales. What I see at B&N when I walk into the doors is that it is mostly patronized by moms and kids (though the crowd isn't as much as it used to be 3-4 years ago). They also prominently display the Nooks. So for Microsoft to get into the e-books market this is the best way possible. The more Microsoft makes these kind of partial investments the better off they are going to be with the Windows 8 platform.

Two things here:
1. the deal was one-sided in B&N's favor. They got patents for the old B&N PLUS a larger share in the newco, which leaves Android as a possibility in the future. MS didn't do that lightly, so they were certainly going to lose (they were silly patents).
2. Amazon is certainly in MS's sights, don't be stupid. They're a retailer with Windows Store now, and they have to start taking XBL's retail sales seriously.

Best Buy is dying, Apple and Amazon are building empires by being retailers, the carriers who are also retailers aren't helping, the rules have changed. MS isn't good at retail right now, and they need to get good in a hurry. I personally think they should have bought the B&M B&N stores. They need a retail presence and they need wholly owned hardware to stock the stores so they can get Apple's margins and economies of scale. Why doesn't anyone else see this? It's so obvious, and as long as Apple goes unrivaled, their profits and stock will continue its meteoric rise.

The digital world is transforming in front of our eyes, whole industries are collapsing, unemployment is permanent for a lot of people and MS is stuck fighting the last wars with old weapons. Funny thing is, Google gets it, but is playing from behind because they never plan anything, like being consumer-facing retailer or an OEM or a patent troll. Life is different outside the data center, eh, guys?

Oh PULEASE!

This investment is the result of the patent infringement case that Microsoft was about to lose, and would have been subject to B&N's counter suit involving anticompetitive behaviour.

B&N settled the suit and Microsoft is now spinning the dollar amount as an 'investment'.

B&N should not have settled.

I have a feeling that Microsoft had always had an idea to have an eBook store and a whole slew other things.

I think the reason why Microsoft is doing a lot of "catching up", is not because they are lazy and not knowing what to do. It is Monopoly. If Microsoft truly brought some of these things to the market, they could have completely dominated the market and nobody would have even a remote chance of selling anything. With Microsoft having that dominating power back 10 years ago or so (maybe close to 15 now?) they need to move "lazily" to allow others to have a chance. Since if Microsoft went full force into the market when the market was fresh, they could have completely wiped everyone out.
