Man, John Sculley should have just left it at "I am not a technologist" and his previous statement about being the wrong person for the job because he "didn't know anything about computers." Newton was not ahead of its time, it was right in its time. Motorola had a nearly identical device. Jobs hit it on the head when he killed Newton and said that the "high order bit" for devices like Newton is being able to communicate over the internet (iPhone), without that function they are not very useful (see Palm Pilot). Sculley tanked Apple and was only given the job at Pepsico because his father-in-law was the Chairman of the Board. Classic case of a crony capitalist not knowing his ankle (or another body part) from his elbow.

I completely agree, which is why I'm confused about this whole "smart TV" push the industry is moving towards. Most people want to sit down and flip channels. A passive viewing experience where media is shoveled into their brains.

The interface is already mature enough for it, and that's why it has barely changed in the past 60 years. Turn on, change channels.

That being said, I think there is a sizeable population that does want a more interactive experience. I've been doing it for years now, just a PC hooked up to a big TV.

1. Turn on
2. Change channel.

Too complicated? Wow...
To be honest, I've failed getting to step 1 for quite a long time now, and it hasn't hurt at all. Visual junk levels have dropped massively, and I enjoy reading again.
