I have a 1st Gen iPad and my husband uses a Touch. I love my iPad and it goes where I do, but when I want a real computer I use my desktop gaming rig I built 18 months ago.

My husband, however, might be one of those customers who'd like a 7" and it would be better for the family if he stuck with Apple -- he is notorious for screwing up software and hardware on any device he touches. I can nag about viruses and malware until I'm blue in the face but it's wasted effort. The Touch, however, has managed to keep functioning without one little gripe or complaint. I looked hard at getting him a 7" Galaxy tablet last Christmas but chickened out after reading reviews on that version of Android and knowing the odds he'd bollux the thing up were just too high.

He is the type of device user who needs a "walled garden." Yes, he doesn't like the fact he can't load the world on it, but my son and I aren't subjected to grousing and "fix my computer, please, now" prods.

Me? I'm looking forward to an iPad 3. Our daughter in college has the iPad2 with the dual cameras, and it would be nice to talk with her via Skype. A faster processor would be a nice addition, too.

Why do we think it would cost $1,500? Is it really just the wage difference? Is it regulation? Taxes?

How long does it take to assemble an iPad? 60 minutes? If someone in China gets $1 an hour and someone here gets $30/hour, where do we get the $1,500 figure? Is it because we'd also have to make the parts here and those costs would be multiplied by the same factor? I thought most of the parts are manufactured in dark factories with robots and minimal oversight.

Are there any facts and figures to help me understand how we get to $1,500?

I think folks might pay $100 more for an iPad built in the U.S. but I agree, they wouldn't pay $1,500. However, without more information I don't know how credible the $1,500 statement is.

Hmmm I believe that the new iPad will be a double-quad-dual-hecto-core quantum processor able to answer your requests before they are even made. However it will come with only a 1 gig hard drive. and will be 20 times heavier than the iPad2....
That's my predictions...presumably I can expect a hefty fee for my amazing analysis... and widespread coverage of my predictions...

these reports are only useful for wiping.. as long as you use soft paper..

if apple manufactured their products in the USA (remember them), the prices would be so high far less would be able to afford them. The Iphone would cost appox. $2800.00 and an Ipad appox $4500.00 Would you but one? mass production like the model T would help except their are not enough skilled engineers in this country to satisfy the demand. It would be nice, but as soon as a factory was on the planning stage, labor unions would be demanding their piece.
