I read somewhere else that they have a web based OS restore. That may be "nice" but if your box dies and you need to boot from a DVD, how does that help? I'm all for options but totally removing DVD based SW media from stores doesn't seem like the most brilliant idea. Sure, I buy and download many commercial programs from the Internet that I use daily, but most of them allow me to burn a copy to a DVD so I can reinstall it myself, without having to do a web based restore. The last thing I would want to do while out on the road and without a solid usable Internet connection is to try to restore such a device. One of my computers is a netbook from 2007 from Acer. It works great, has a restore option and works with an external USB DVD drive that I picked up for $75. I do have many Apple products including computing devices like the iPad2 but I also have Windows devices and really appreciate the freedom to purchase software and hardware from pretty much wherever I want. You don't have that kind of choice with Apple. If anyone is old enough to remember their groundbreaking add reminiscent of 1984, Apple has become the IBM company from the early 1980s when everything IBM sold was proprietary. Of course, those that don't know any better don't recognize that similarity. Apple is a marketing machine. I like their products, but I know what I'm giving up when I purchase one and that's why they will always have a limited role in my home. I prefer open architectures and solutions, including Linux based operating systems.

so what do you do when a crash wrecks these apps. Its very difficult if not impossible, at least in the windows environment I know, to make an installable copy of the OS.

Again, I dont understand apple. But my son has apple and he has always bought copies where you have a reinstallable disk.

Help, or is this just apple being arrogant.
