highly doubtful. AT&T spends ~20B a year in capital, not to mention the other headaches it takes on by building and maintaining a global network. Do you really think this is what apple wants to invest in when it already has other areas it needs to invest in for macs/phones/tablets/ipods/tv's etc? It would be a terrible idea.

Apple has Billions of dollars to spare and that is a lot of Money power they could indeed start a small cell phone carrier network But i doubt they would do that. they could however create a more powerful
entertainment content provider that would beat out netflex or Amazon or others they have the money to buy the rights to show and sell Dvd's, video , movies tv shows music, books and ect.

Globally, Apple does have a 23% market share in the smartphone market. In the US, it's fluctuates from 25%-45%. It's a confirmed fact that Android is the biggest smartphone platform in the US and also globally. It's tablet market share declined to 58% in 2011 and is expected to shrink even more, although that does not mean profits will go down. That connected TV stat seems suspect, especially since connected TV is vague. In terms of actual TV sales, Apple has 0% market share because it doesn't actually sell TVs. Don't be too much of a fanboy. Also, I suggest you work on using periods. Your comment was very difficult to read.

It isn't about market share... Apple has always been happy to not be #1. What Apple want are revenues... What market can they get for the iTunes store? Remember, Siri was available for Android back when it was release (I had it on my phone...). Apple gave up ? 30% of their market by excluding Android...

What the possibility of a national network gives Apple is the real threat of pulling iPhones, etc. from the ISPs if they don't agree to good terms. To be a serious threat, though, Apple would have to buy RIM or another provider with national coverage (US Cellular, maybe). Otherwise, their threat holds no water...

Unless they are buying RIM (wouldn't cost much...), I don't see it as a real threat. Of course, with RIM posting for iOS developers and this news... If I were Apple, I'd seed that to the market...

I could see Apple maybe buying RIM... RIM is still a viable powerhouse... Ask yourself which firm still provides security and privacy for its user-base?

If RIM can prevent apps from leaking private info, RIM might be rewarded for the privacy-invasion backlash.

I thought it was a really interesting idea that they would create their own service, it would definitely be interesting to see where it takes them. Remember, they did just announce dividends for the first time in company history.... maybe to entice more investors in their next huge project? I think it seems completely plausible. And think back on every criticism of the iphone... bad antenna, bad service, slow internet speeds and video. All of that is pretty out of the control of Apple (which apple loves to be in control) so it only makes sense that they would try to create their own infrastructure. It only makes them that much closer to world domination :) they have the money to buy their own country if they wanted

Talk about irresponsible... you really believe that, as the headline implies, Apple would burn it's bridges with it's current carrier partners by attempting to launch it's own independent service? In the US, Apple phones make up less than 20% of smartphones. Approximately 4% of cell phones currently active are smart phones. My math indicates that this leaves Apple with less than 1% of all cell phones, negating the need for any infrastructure of their own... especially when it risks losing the less than 1% it has, should Verizon and AT&T decide not to share roaming abilities and/or drops the phone from their current rosters. Remember, for Verizon they'd lose up to 1.5% of their customers and possible another 1% of future customers from the frenzy this would throw the iMedia into... Apple on the other hand, would lose slightly more than 65% of it's American mobile customer base instantly.

I know that the second paragraph then negates the arguments made in the former, and that fact alone negates the need for an article. Inventing news or twisting it to entice readers to click links via misleading headlines is a fairly bad habit and it'd be nice for Slashgear to shy away from such behavior.
