I do something similar. I stream content on to my TV from my computer via my PS3 player. Both the HD cable box and the PS3 are connected to my A/V receiver while my PS3 also serves as my blueray player as well. I like my suround speakers so it's worth it to get a good reciever so you can run everything through it. My system will upgrade standard or 720p video/sound to 1080p or as close to it as it can depending on the source. So it makes me wonder why someone would want to spend a bundle on a iTV or MS Kinect TV when you can get alot of what these TV's will offer already with a proper and probably much cheaper set up.

I'm sure iTV will replace your remote with any iOS device that you have. There will be an app for that. And Siri will just be the icing on the cake. As far as renting movies or purchasing them. I can do that from my iPhone. So I'm sure iCloud will pick that up and automatically add it to your iTV.

Well, we do not know whether iTV will come or not.

Whatever, if it comes the rest of the contenders cannot claim they were caught by surprise.

I have a expensive piece of an stylish "Smart TV".
This TV displays content very well, it's really superb.
The rest however is a dumb TV and the "Smart TV" is dumb and stale as well.

This high quality piece takes 12 secs to boot from standby.
It's slow switching channels.
It comes with an remote app but the software cannot find the TV in the network.
The Smart TV comes with tons of features but they are just way too slow and unwieldy to use.
Setting up the beast takes time and knowledge and technical understanding.

Looks a bit similar to the feature/smart phone scape a couple of years ago to me.

My luxury TV has been degarded to a big monitor now.
I use the TV remote to switch the set on and off, that's it.

I get the TV content via an STB that is hooked up to an HDMI port of the TV set.
I connected my PC via a 10 meter HDMI cable to the TV and use the PC as an DVD, BR and YouTube video player. Slim TV sets can only deliver poor sound so I don't use the TV speakers which are built into the TV stand either but prefer to use an A/V receiver.

I think Apple could create an interesting offering.

This will be a hard sell for all but the most hard up ifan. The market for TV's is already so over saturated with very slim profit margins. It will be interesting to see what Apple can come up with though, their new screen tech sounds promising but despite years worth of improvements to non-plasma based screen tech they still can't beat plasma for their black levels, color pop and fast action viewing. Add to that the fact plasma has made huge strides in power consumtion, they are dirt cheap and last forever. It blows my mind that people will spend twice as much on LED's when there just LCD's with different back lighting so i supose it's not impossible for Apple to carve out a slice of the TV market. If they can put out a set with black levels not seen before on non-plasma TV's and a higher refresh rate than the competition along with Apples built in eco system they could command the high price you know a TV from Apple would cost.

Surely you mean augment, not replace, the remote control, right? What happens if your connection to the iCloud is interrupted? Since all Siri commands are processed through the Apple servers (unless they make some voice processing controlled on the phone, like ICS), you would not be able to use the TV. As for "the ability to purchase and rent content directly from the TV set itself", don't smart TVs already have that capability?

rubbish, turn the lights out, check out the iphones black levels... they are dark grey at best...

the g s II's screen is far superior, and is very good in sunlight...

you cannot beat a s-amoled yet...

the galaxy nexus has a 1280 * 720 s-amoled screen this will become the norm next year and i bet the ipad 3 will just be over that res or near it.

10" 1920 * 1080 would be too small to see text etc... plus it wont be s-amoled so the blacks will be dark grey...

i'm sure it will look fantastic anyways to people who do not know the difference.

You can barely tell the difference in quality?

Can you not tell the difference between black and gray?

Do you have no idea what color saturation is? Contrast?

Samsung's OLED screens wipe the floor with iPhone4S's crap IPS LCD...

I'm not exactly expecting any of the AAPL nuts to agree with me, nor do I really need their validation. I'm well content with the entire display industry's roadmaps that demonstrate their desire to move away from LCD.

OLED = The future
LCD = The past

Great job spoonfeeding your minions dated tech, AAPL.

I've used both and your WRONG! Go ahead, if you dare, and compare an iPhone 4S along side one of Samsung's new OLED screens..... they are pretty much the same, I can barely tell the difference in quality.
Do some research?

blah blah blah...

You've clearly never looked an AMOLED screen in person before... AMOLED surpasses any variant of LCD tech by miles.

Toot LCD's horn because AAPL uses it all you want, doesn't mean it's any less inferior or antiquated.

Wow, did you miss out on an education. Really, do some research before posting garbage.

All Apple products currently use In-Plane Switching (IPS), which is a type of Thin film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) developed by LG and is currently surpassing AMOLED in brightness and power consumption. Sharp focuses on Advanced super view (ASV) TFT-LCD technology and is probably why Apple purchased the equipment to produce the IPS displays themselves. Samsung has brand new technology called Super Plane Line Switching (Super PLS) and Apple has agreements with Samsung for the use of the technology, but were worried of production issues.
Hot technology, ownership of the equipment and access to quality trained workforce makes for a pretty stable manufacturing process. Way to go Apple. If you have the cash you can rule.
