The iMac is pretty thin and has a moving hard drive, desktop processor/motherboard and tons of other components. Now make all the processor ARM, the harddrive a simple 16gb flash like in the iPod, and it also has the ability to spread out over 55″ to make it thinner and disperse heat. It could be thin enough.
“thinness” is all a marketing ploy anyway- when your tv is mounted on a wall, as long as its 5″ or smaller, you cant tell. Heck, my tilt mount has my tv out 6″ or so on its own. If people watch their tv while it’s on from the side, they’re watching it wrong. :)

This sounds cool but what would the tv look like with all that stuffed into it? It’s either going to have it in it’s base/pedestal making it a tv you can’t hang on a wall or the stuff go’s into the back of the unit making it thicker than the competitions sets. I do like the idea of having a blueray player cbl box and pvr intergrated though, everything eles you mentioned has been done or is being done already including voice commands. I’m thinking that Apple will go the route of the 4k screen or some equivalent and super thin bezel and i bet the set has rounded corners, Apple has a thing for those,lol.

Sounds great. It could be marketed similarly to the iMac. People say that $1,600 for a 27″ iMac is expensive, but when you factor in the cost of a $1,000 IPS monitor, $600 is a steal for the high end componentry, aluminum body, touch mouse and wireless keyboard).

So while the naysayers will claim $500 for the logo. You actually get the $99 apple TV, $100 Blu Ray Player, DVR, and no clutter.

Sounds like a winner- sign me up

I know everyone loves to bag on apple. But bare with me. If apple made the following- all integrated (with a couple hdmi inputs for game boxes):
-55″ (or whatever size) 1080p
-Blu-Ray on side (like iMac)
-Cable Boxes or card slot built in
-Wifi to allow streaming
-Small hard drive to allow for app installs and DVR
-Siri on remote control that only activates when you hold down the “Siri” button. I.e- “play Adele”. “record breaking bad on Tuesday”, etc
-just one remote and a beautiful user interface with seamless transitioning between streaming, cable guide, Blu ray, etc.

All of this could be done without having some “exclusive” content deal. The benefit is ease of use, simplicity, and all in one design.

Is that not worth an additional $500 over a comparable 55″? I’d easily spend that for ease of use and integration with my other idevices (take the biased glasses off a minute)

What TV’s are lacking today is power to do more than just transferring a signal to a big screen. iOS devs will begin to make all sorts of apps and games for your TV. For the first time in history it will make little sense to hook a game console or a dvd player to your television set. If they get this right, im sold. It wont be the first time that Apple changes the game in the electronic industry. I just really cant picture what an Apple television set will look like. This is a big deal guys, if you really want a decent google TV integration on your Samsung TV, you better wish an Apple TV will be a reality sometime soon. Android lacks direction without Apple.

The advantage is that you get to pay a ton of money for something that you can already buy but this time the box is built into the set so that when it breaks you have the glorious fortune of getting to send the whole thing in to be repaired instead of the current set top box formula….which is exactly what Apple wants and exactly what Apple is going to get because they are perfect (sarcastic laugh). Wonder if Apple really thinks they can get away with this TV knockoff nonsense and brainwash the hordes of iSlaves into giving up the HDTV’s they bought within the last few years in order to replace it with something that has a set top box built into it?? Btw, in case you haven’t noticed I hate Apple and Steve Jobs was a hypocrite and an asshole if he thought he could get away with this iTV….So what you are telling us Steve is that nobody else is allowed to sell a smartphone or a tablet because they look to similar to Apple’s products so you get them legally banned and now you expect to design something that in all respects is going to look like a flat panel TV and not get your design legally banned? Does anybody see the hypocrisy in Apple’s logic here?

Hopefully if Apple decide to release a product like this, they would also release an updated AppleTV box that adds exact same features to an existing 1080p TV. And then there’s the issue of content. Everything “HD” on Apple is currently limited to 720p which is why I have been renting from VUDU and not from iTunes yet. Hopefully this will come with the new device (whatever it may be).

I’m surprised apple hasn’t pushed out a TV a lot sooner–not like they make any of the hardware, all they have to do is design something and have their Asian suppliers and manufacturers pump it out–after all we know there’s a certain sect that will purchase anything with a bitten apple on the back of it.

My guess would be a new iTV and software to drive existing tv’s to the App Store. Why get into what is now a commodity market: LCD tv’s? Content and iTunes integration is where the money is and throwing in Siri as a voice activated remote would be a killer.
