The reason why is because AT&T instructed Apple to change the icon, AT&T couldn’t wait and released it early with it being listed as a 4G compatible device. So the phone was always 4G just the icon was incorrect.

you ought to update your blog post since you’ve clearly mistaken.
AT&T always used a ’4G’ service (HSPA+) with the iPhone 4S, as other posts say. Verizon iPhones do not use this, thus Verizon iPhones not having ’4G’ labeling… because they don’t have it.

Now that Apple is SAYING it is using 4G both with Verizon and AT&T iPad 3′s, the new OS version reflects this.

The ONLY reason it didn’t say it before was for marketing purposes to make the iPad 3 seem cooler…

Actually AT&T hpsa network is 3G and the 4s can do hpsaa+. The problem is 4s didn’t show it until now in 5.1 iOS

4G = IMT-2000…please look it up. None of the cell providers are compliant yet. The networks will actually be 4G when they roll out LTE Advanced. Until then, please be more critical of the nonsense the cell providers shove your way.

Right so when you can’t get LTE signal, how does that 3G treat you? Sucky? I thought so. While your waiting on that 3G I get to enjoy hspa+ speeds when I’m out of LTE coverage zones. Tell me, how is that not beating the competition?

I get the same speeds on my GNote in Lakeland, FL. Generally between 6-9 mbps on hspa+ and 40+ on LTE. People can whine all they want about our so called “terrible service” but no body else can touch our data speeds! Lol.

Yes, T-Mobile has HSPA+ as well. I use my Galaxy Nexus on their network and regularly see double digit megabit (yes, I know the difference) speeds. Even so, I feel odd calling it 4G, so I usually just refer to it as HSPA+ or 3G+, reserving the title “4G” for the LTE networks.

To me, no iphone has 4G.

My Samsung Galaxy S Super-Incredible BIONICAL DroidTastic Note has like 50Gs, and thats on a bad day. I get like 4000 Terrabytes/s (bytes not bits). I can download every app on the Android market (err.. I mean the Play market, I think) SIMULTANEOUSLY and take a shit at the same time. In .2 seconds.

INCREDIBLE.

And my Samsung has a built in virtual “girlfriend” app so I don’t get lonely. Samsung knows their customers well!

For the record AT&T iPhone 4S users are on HSPA+ data networks which have been called 4G.. They aren’t 4G LTE but they are 4G none the less.. This is not an issue nor an error.. This is intentional and how it is. Next time do some simple research like actually calling AT&T and they will tell you the iPhone 4S is a 4G phone.

Here is the real issue, I’ve tested the droid razor 4g lte right beside my 4s, ran about 6 speed tests shows that at&t was getting 7.5 down. Ran the droid 4g lte 6 times and it was getting 5-8 down, so I really don’t care about the 4g icon but AT&T does have speeds just as fast as 4g lte but actually on a ramped up 3G network!

This was AT&T’s call, not Apple’s. AT&T is saying any HSPA+ capable device is 4G. (Just like Sprint has said WiMax is 4G, when it isn’t. Heck, not even LTE is 4G. Only Advanced LTE breaks the 4G barrier.) The 4G on the iPhone 4S simply means you’re in HSPA+ coverage, AT&T put its foot down and Apple complied due to their contract with AT&T. The fact that these articles exist show one of two things: writers today have a gross negligence when it comes to actually doing their research before writing an article, or writers insist on being internet trolls themselves just to create buzz about a non issue.

If there is an article here deserving of flak, it’s towards carriers (in this case AT&T) misrepresenting their networks to create buzz.

I can’t believe someone as ignorant about this subject actually gets paid to write about it! Anyone with half a clue already knew the at&t version of the 4S had HSPA+ from day one and the only thing the update changed was the network indicator to show when you have a HSPA+ (4G) signal. If this author would have read any tech blog or news site in the last week he would have known this.

Your iPhone is now accessing data using the 3G HSPA+ network. While not truly 4G, it promises “4G-like speeds to older devices”, and frankly I am getting tired of all the whining from some of the article writers on the web. I live in Little Rock AR, and my iPhone data jumped from 1-2 Mbps to now over 7-8 Mbps. I will gladly share screenshots with anyone, just ask me. Maybe I can post the screenshots on Flickr or Snapfish. Do I feel “cheated and scammed by AT&T?”. Hell no. I CHOSE to buy the 3G iPhone 4s, so I will not be pissed about ANY improvement. On the other points, YES a true 4G LTE network is CAPABLE of much faster speeds but in my particular market I have not seen it. I also have a Verizon 4G LTE mifi device, and the speeds are not much better. I have even seen in some cases my new 4G “fakely marked” iPhone outperform a 4G droid on the LTE network. There are just SO MANY VARIABLES TO CONSIDER and not just numbers on a spreadsheet. It’s not all black and white. So, while I am NOT an Apple fanboy or an AT&T employee, I am still a satisfied customer. At least in my case. I wish you good luck, and enjoy your phone. It’s still the most capable phone out there ;)

If you look at the changelog with iOS 5.1, it says updated AT&T network indicator. Sounds like the 4G change identifying the HSPA+ network was intentional and stated as soon as the update was released. I’m not sure why everyone is so surprised. I even saw it on my iPod Touch when I downloaded 5.1.
