I think they are more likely to see an opportunity to make a little more profit and raise theirs, unless they don’t feel confident consumers would buy the price rise based on percieved quality and benefits.

Ok i would agree with this comment on a 4S thread but with regard to the iPad, no tablet short of the transformer prime has it bested. And since I’ve never used a prime I can’t say its smoother and more fluid. In this regard no tablet can touch the iPad.

..Still.. average users will buy it.. That’s what the Apple Stores are for, once average Joe comes in and experience it chances that he’ll consider buying it is high. Unlike the competition, most of their tablets are collecting dust and sometimes a dummy model is on display. If retina display lives up to the ipad expectation then I’m sold.

The screen cost can only be absorbed if they decrease the pricing of everything else but unless we know the cost of the screen then it’s impossible to tell just how much cost has to be absorbed for the pricing to stay the same.

If both the screen and LTE add to the cost and they can’t reduce anything else then it may indeed induce a $80 price hike. Assuming of course there are no other significant changes…

But like you said, we shall see soon enough…

That’s right. They don’t need to make a lot of profit on iPad3 due to the hardware upgrades (screen resolution, CPU, RAM, 4G or whatever). Remember they have ~$100 billions to play with. So increasing the price is the dumb thing to do and Apple know better than that. They want market shares to sell apps while make enough profits on hardware to continue to dominate the market. I can see the 128GB model with $100 extra, but who cares about 128GB since iCloud is here.

Going straight with your point then, the screen should be absorbed by decreasing the price of everything else, and if the processor is just the A5X it cost them no more money, so the only thing left really is adding LTE, and even with Apples high margins, there’s no way it would add $80 to it.

The introduction of the retina display was offset by the lower costs of the rest of the device. Things like the initial costs of starting the A4 productions was already absorbed by the iPad for example and the larger production numbers for iPhones lets them lower manufacturing per unit costs with the larger quantities.

Similarly the iPad 2 reduced costs with a thinner design and allowed for a release at the same pricing.

However, they may not be able to shave any of the cost off for the iPad 3 and still increase the specifications. While Apple is also not yet in a position that they need worry about profit loss yet to competition. So this rumor may be true, after all even if it does affect sales negatively they can always reduce the price later and market momentum is still in their favor.

The iPhone 4 was no extra cost compared to the 3GS, yet it doubled the resolution with a better display, added a front camera and upgraded the back, upgraded to a much better processor and twice the RAM.

It would be extremely foolish for them to go up on the price when everyone is lowering their prices. But as always, no one knows for sure yet lol

This is one of the dumbest rumors I’ve heard for the iPad 3. With every other manufacturer releasing them with lower and lower prices, why give people more of a reason to switch to Android? This doesn’t make any kind of sense at all for them to increase the price. Maybe the $579 was for the cheapest 3G/4G enabled one, which would be a decrease in price?
It will be a complete fail to increase the price by almost $100 when others are selling them for $400, $300 even $200.
