Apple is reportedly set to announce a March 2 2011 event, at which the company will unveil the new iPad 2. According to AllThingsD‘s “multiple sources”, the event – on Wednesday next week – will take place in San Francisco, likely at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.

The new iPad 2 is expected to feature the same size display as the current iPad, also running at the same 1024 x 768 resolution (rather than a so-called Retina Display at double the resolution); it’s also expected to have a slimmer chassis, with a squared-off back panel and curved edges. Cameras are also expected to make their debut on the Apple tablet, with one on the front and another on the back, for Face Time video calls among other things.

If the rumors are true, then Apple is likely to begin sending out invitations to the event imminently. The company usually gives press around a week’s notice for these launches, so we’ll be keeping an eagle eye on our inbox tomorrow and Thursday.
