As an app developer, I did not experience piracy until a week ago. My sales and install stats were pretty much the same for my paid app until a week ago. Now, over the past week, I tend to see 2-3 sales per day, but app install stats are increasing by 10-20 per day. I even had a 2 day spike of around 100 installs.

In app purchase translates to less revenue for devs in both iOS an Android. They're good for luring users into free games but not if you wan't to sell at 2.99 -1.49 or -.99 Of course there are exceptions but generally this is a bad move. There is a reason why e-books store try to evade in app billing in iOS... $ bill yo!

for the countries that don't deal with Google wallet there is Amazon.

As an Android Dev I can say that 90% of the time it makes more sense to build towards Android 2.3 with special features added with the 3.2 apis
Most apps I use do it this way so they keep working on Gingerbread while adding Honeycomb enhancements

Last time I checked, provided you jailbraked your device, you could download almost all paid iOS apps on fake appstore... iPirates make piracy way easier for their peers this way

People buy less paid apps on android because there are less paid apps to buy, which seems simple enough.

It seems to me that most devs prefer to give the app away, with money earned through ad revenue (which, of course, is missing from this survey).

I remember reading that angry birds gets $1 million through ad revenue on android alone per month. Remember, that's ad revenue which is sustained indefinitely until the user stops playing the app. This is in contrast to a one off payment for the app on the iPhone.

i would suggest that there is potential to earn greater money from Android, given the right app...

The difference being any schmuck can download an apk from 4shared but jailbreak takes cautious effort.. (currently no jailbreak the current iPad2 firmware.)

Most people do not jailbreak but almost all android buyers do..

Think about. Most cooked roms are pirated code from various vendors cobbled together..

Not a new issue at all and brought up by developers since the early days of the Android Market. Piracy happens on iOS as well, but nobody talks about cracked .ipa files on jailbroken iOS devices since it's easier to point to the seemingly inherent piracy that Android has. That said, I do believe that Google should do something about Android .apk piracy to protect their interests. I also believe that it's overblown that companies make more or less money selling applications. Of these 75 app vendors, what is their product? If they are ad based and move a few hundred thousand downloads, they stand to make money. If they are selling a .99 horribly made game then I don't doubt they will lose money. Look to the Angry Birds model. There is an article that they are making boatloads of cash on Android giving the app away and selling ad space.
